The Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, NYC, will hold a three day summer seminar, Liberation and the Aftermath of the Holocaust for Jewish school educators. The seminar is part of the Museum's Shoah Teaching Alternatives in Jewish Education (STAJE) programs, and will take place at the Museum from Monday, July 7 through Wednesday July 9, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The liberation of the concentration and labor camps was the beginning of a new life for the survivors of the Holocaust. Often sick, bereaved of family and friends, survivors struggled to salvage what remained of their old lives. Anti-Semitism and Sovietization in Eastern Europe led many Jews to flee to the West where they created dynamic, if temporary communities in the Displaced Persons camps in Germany and elsewhere. Afterwards, survivors rebuilt their lives in Israel, the United States and Europe.
The seminar participants will study this transition with leading scholars and listen to testimony exploring the questions and dilemmas Jews faced as they entered and built the postwar world.
