Masa Israel Teaching Fellows will begin 2019-2020 School Year with 200 English-speaking Volunteers

Masa Israel Teaching Fellows (MITF), a Masa initiative in partnership with Israel’s Ministry of Education, is set to launch its ninth year of programming with 200 English-speaking young Jewish professionals. Fellows will teach English in elementary and middle schools within Israel’s social and geographic periphery, including in the cities of Beit She’an, Ramla, Nazareth, Bat-Yam, Rishon LeZion, Haifa, Ashdod, Rehovot, Netanya, Beit-Shemesh, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
This year’s cohort is comprised of a diverse group of individuals hailing from a wide array of English-speaking countries, including the United States, England, Canada and Australia. Fellows range in levels of Jewish observance.
There is also a growing number of fellows with degrees from top universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Berkley and Sorbonne. Many fellows hold teaching certifications and have previous field experience; some having already taught English in Thailand, Hungary, Easter Island and more.
Thirty-five to forty percent of MITF alumni have made aliyah with some choosing to continue working in various frameworks of education.
Masa Israel Teaching Fellows is on a 10-month, hands-on service program which brings exemplary college graduates from English-speaking countries to teach English in Israel. Its goal is to address Israel's educational achievement gap and the widespread underperformance of youth in low-income communities.
Fellows are responsible to pay $1,000 for the full 10-month experience. However, certified teachers will earn a monthly compensation of 4,000 NIS (about $1,090 USD) and will, after initial training, teach their own English classes. English teaching assistants (non-certified teachers), will earn a monthly cash stipend of 1,750 NIS (about $490 USD). The $1,000 program fee includes accommodations, Hebrew Ulpan classes, pedagogical orientation, health insurance, trips around Israel, and other enrichment activities.
Masa alumni from other programs are eligible to participate in MITF after their first programs, for a fee of $5,500, instead of $1,000.
