19th annual CIE/ISMI Educator Workshop on Modern Israel
Source: CIE - Center for Israel Education
Building upon the previous successes of the Institute for the Study of Modern Israel (ISMI), CIE offers the CIE/ISMI Educator Workshop on Modern Israel: a four-day opportunity for educators and educational leaders to deepen their understanding of Israel’s history, politics, economy and society, while cultivating participants’ skills in classroom application and best practices.
After collaborating with experts and peers, and honing their instructional practices, Educator Workshop alumni are uniquely positioned to foster understanding of the significance of Zionism and the State of Israel in Jewish and world history for generations of students.
This professional development program provides fourth- to 12th-grade educators core content and innovative teaching strategies; enables them to impart to students a comprehensive understanding of Israeli history, politics and society; and fosters a learning community of educators exchanging information and best practices. Participants join a network of more than 2,300 educators across North America who have participated in CIE/ISMI workshops.
Topics covered at the workshop include the biblical and rabbinic connections of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, the origins and development of modern Zionism, the strategic growth of Jewish settlement under the Ottomans and British, Israel’s political system, Israeli music and culture, the U.S.-Israel relationship, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the range of domestic issues confronting the maturing Israeli society. The workshop emphasizes strategies for incorporating materials on those topics into educational settings in age-appropriate ways.
Cohorts of two or more educators from schools and institutions are encouraged to apply. Workshop attendees do not need to know Hebrew or be Jewish. Because of limited space, interested educators are encouraged to apply early. The $300 application fee covers single-room accommodations, kosher meals and snacks, and resource materials. A travel stipend of up to $200 is available, as is special pricing for schools that send multiple educators.
Applications are due April 1, 2020.
