Previously available only on CD-ROM, the Encyclopedia of Jewish Women features over 1,700 biographies, 300 thematic essays, and 1,400 photographs and illustrations on a wide range of Jewish women through the centuries. Accessible and free to Internet users all over the world, the Encyclopedia appeals to a wide range of readers, including educators, activists, high school students, researchers, scholars, and the merely curious. Its thematic and visual links make it possible to draw connections across time and space in ways that are impossible in a printed book.
Paula Hyman and Dalia Ofer, assisted by an editorial board of 20 scholars and over 1000 contributors, have created this well-researched and well-written comprehensive resource about Jewish women throughout history.
The online edition takes advantage of various Web 2.0 technologies to enhance the ability of researchers and other site visitors to find and share the contents of the Encyclopedia. For example, on the Encyclopedia home page, a keyword "cloud" provides a visualization of the keywords, countries and time periods used in the Encyclopedia.
At the top of each article are buttons to email the link or to use various social networking sites to share the article. There are also links to related content elsewhere on the Jewish Women's Archive website and on the World Wide Web.
Each article is accompanied by a "Discuss" page designed to solicit suggestions for updates, further research, and additional links (including links to audio, video, and visual resources). Educators are also encouraged to share how they have used the Encyclopedia with students by filling out online "comment forms".
