Women and the Holocaust: A STAJE Summer Seminar for Educators
Source: Museum of Jewish Heritage
The Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust invites Jewish school educators to apply to participate in a special three day summer seminar, Women and the Holocaust. The seminar is part of the Museum's Shoah Teaching Alternatives in Jewish Education (STAJE) programs, and will take place at the Museum from Monday, July 6 through Wednesday July 8, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Although Jewish women largely shared the same ultimate fate as did Jewish men during the Holocaust, their experience was often different. At times when men were unable to work or were unavailable, women added to their traditional roles to become breadwinners and diplomats with a hostile world. Women also played leading roles in every sort of resistance. To the extent possible, women took advantage of the few opportunities their gender afforded, but gender and gender-defined roles were also liabilities.
At the seminar, leading scholars will teach about the heroic efforts of Jewish women to maintain themselves and their families with dignity during the Holocaust.
Jewish women who survived the Holocaust will share their inspiring testimony of and about the dilemmas they faced.
The STAJE Summer Seminar is free, but admission is by advanced application.
