Personalized learning seeks to increase student enthusiasm and learning by tailoring the instructional environment – what, when, how and where students learn – to address the individual needs, skills and interests of each student. We are proud that the Jewish day school field is making strides in the use of personalized learning to encourage students to take ownership of their own education while developing deep connections with one another, their teachers and other adults.

The Annual Prizmah Day School Conference is taking place March 10-12, 2019 in Atlanta, GA. It brings together Jewish day school leaders, lay leaders, and communal professionals from across the North American day school landscape to learn from one another and be inspired to dream together.

Being a classroom teacher can be an isolating experience. You may not know where to turn for new ideas and wish there was a way you could benefit from the experimentation and expertise of others in classrooms like yours across the country. Fortunately, in the past few years, Jewish day school educators have been able to find networks designed to incubate and spread ideas and practices. As a network-weaver working at the AVI CHAI Foundation, I have an interest in understanding and documenting these networks, which could range from organized programs, such as the JDS Collaborative, for which I serve as program officer at AVI CHAI, to a much less formal Twitter chat. Let’s look at what these networks are, which ones are more likely to scale through successfully spreading ideas, and why.

Since Chanukah is the Festival of Lights, we wanted to shine a light on some bright spots we are seeing in the Jewish day school field. It is our hope that each day of Chanukah will grow even brighter as you learn about these bright spots and consider your work in a new light. Whereas day school leaders often have access to conferences and peer networks, teachers have less opportunities for outside support and inspiration. One exciting new idea is to break down what at times feel like isolating classroom walls and provide opportunities for teachers to collaborate – within schools and across schools.

This summer, AVI CHAI is once again sponsoring Jewish day school leaders to participate in the Art of Leadership (AOL) and Leadership: An Evolving Vision (LEV) programs of the Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. AOL participants completed the program the week of June 26, and LEV is taking place this week. A total of 36 leaders from across the US and Canada were chosen for the two cohorts.

The Prizmah Jewish Day School conference on February 5-7, 2017, in Chicago was a strong manifestation of the energy and excitement around the birth of Prizmah, the new central address for Jewish day schools, which staged this impressive gathering of more than 1000 stakeholders in Jewish education. The conference featured innovative shared experiences ranging from interactive improv workshops and custom sketches of Jewish day school life by Second City Works to a keynote lecture by world-renowned game designer and author Jane McGonigal, who encouraged the audience to consider: Why don’t our learning platforms work more like a game?

As evidenced by the high rate of participation in an AVI CHAI webinar yesterday, Hebrew instruction is a topic which elicits passion in many Jewish day school educators and leaders. The webinar – hosted by Dr. Michael Berger, AVI CHAI Program Officer – sought to illuminate the challenges and possibilities of JDS Hebrew language education in the JDS classroom. It was based off two case studies on this topic from “How Schools Enact Their Jewish Missions: 20 Case Studies of Jewish Day Schools”: “Meshuga La Davar: Hebrew,” about The Epstein School, by Dr. Michael Berger and Pearl Mattenson, and “A School That Places Israel at Its Center,” about the Golda Och Academy, by Dr. Jack Wertheimer, who served as Project Director of the case studies project. Speaking on the webinar were Stan Beiner and Dr. Joyce Raynor, former heads of Epstein and Golda Och, respectively. Beiner is now a consultant to non-profit organizations and schools, and Dr. Raynor currently serves as the Head of School of the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Campus in Las Vegas, NV.

This year, the DigitalJLearning Network (DJLN) sponsored 15 educators from 15 different institutions to attend the annual International Society for Technology in Education Conference (ISTE 2015), which took place from June 28-July 1 in Philadelphia. The premier educational technology conference, ISTE brought together thousands of educators from around the world to learn about this exciting area of growth in the world of education. Following the conference, DJLN has been featuring a variety of helpful resources and perspectives on their blog.

New Case Study Available: Zafon Elementary School: A Station-Rotation Model for Supporting 21st Century Learning
As part of AVI CHAI’s investment in the field of blended and online learning, we are excited to share with you the first in a series of four cases that study and document the experiences of day schools introducing and implementing this mode of learning. Our goal is to bring to life this innovative model and share real-life examples of the learning in action. “Zafon Elementary School: A Station-Rotation Model for Supporting 21st Century Learning,” describes an Orthodox, pre-K through 2nd grade school, which opened in 2012 with blended learning as a core element of its design. As the study’s author remarks, “This case is in many ways a study of implementation, of translating from a design on paper to the delivery of a program in practice.”

Summer is the perfect time for day school leaders to reflect, dream, and plan on how to strengthen and improve their schools in the coming year. To help them do just that, AVI CHAI sponsors selected day schools leaders to attend one of two leadership institutes at The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Fifteen leaders attended the summer’s first institute, Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership (AOL), from June 21-27, 2015. The goal of the institute was to help identify areas of school improvement, establish priorities, develop strategies, and build a base of support around a change initiative.
