The Great Jewish Books Teacher Summer Seminar (July 7–August 2, 2019) is a program for teachers at Jewish middle and high schools interested in enriching their curricula with materials that reflect the breadth and depth of modern Jewish literature. The four-week seminar takes place at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts, home to exhibits on Jewish history and culture as well as to a vast collection of Yiddish books.

It’s now been about eight years since AVI CHAI became interested in the field of personalized learning and the potential that this new model of education has to impact student growth and classroom experience. We concentrated our efforts on supporting a shift to blended learning, the strategic combination of teacher-led instruction and technology, as a way of creating more student-centered classrooms, where teachers are personalizing instruction based on data from technology platforms. Of course it now is satisfying to witness the adoption of these methods in many North American day schools. At the same time, we have learned a great deal about the most effective ways to approach this work to help schools actually make these changes.

As we light the last Chanuka candle tonight, I would like to share some thoughts about the JEDLAB Facebook Group and what this network is meant to be. It was created as a place to be creative, innovative and to think out of the box. It was created to bring all different flavors of the Jewish world together to try and bring new ideas, big ideas, to make a difference in the work we do. I joined when the network was barely 2,000. It is amazing to me that we are now about to hit 10,000.

MOFET Online Seminar: Challenges in Evaluating the Study of Hebrew as an Additional Language (in Ivrit)
This year’s MOFET online seminar for the teaching of Hebrew to beheld between January 7 – 17, 2019, will focus on assessment and challenges it poses to teachers and to the planning of learning processes. Assessment is a central component in teaching and learning processes, and in order to perform it correctly and effectively, professional knowledge and mastery of skills are required. In the field of language instruction in general and teaching Hebrew as an additional language, special issues must be addressed, including: How to assess the mastery of language skills (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, and verbal expression)? Which methods of assessment are appropriate and which are not appropriate? How can technological applications help evaluate?

To increase the likelihood of school-wide change and ultimately reach a greater number of teachers, The Pardes Center for Jewish Educators (PCJE) will hold a Tefilah Education Conference for Day School Administrators at the Pearlstone Retreat Center in Reisterstown, MD from June 24-28, 2019. PCJE will host a maximum of 15 school administrators and/or key tefilah leaders best able and empowered to lead the tefilah education change process in their schools.

Beginning in 2019, the Certificate in Jewish Leadership for Educators will provide senior-level educators the knowledge and skills necessary for them to serve in leadership capacities. The curriculum will prepare participants to meet educational challenges facing Jewish communities in the 21st century and to embrace growth opportunities in their careers and organizations.

In celebration of Israel's 70th year of independence, Hebrew College's Shoolman Graduate School of Jewish Education will be holding a conference October 28-31. 2018 focusing on the multiple dimensions of Israel, including its diverse people, spirit of innovation, Hebrew language, Israeli literature, culture, nature and much more. The conference is designed to expand educators' and professionals' expand their knowledge about Israel and help them develop skills to share their learning with students and families. Each day of the conference will be dedicated to different topics and audiences.

A couple months ago, while preparing a staff retreat, one of my colleagues suggested that I lead a session on the why’s and how’s of Jewish learning at Moishe House. I have done Jewish learning as a student and a teacher, inside and outside of Moishe House, in Israel and elsewhere. But this made me realize I had never taken the time to formalize the attributes of Jewish learning at Moishe House. I knew that the session would give me the opportunity to confront and thicken my perception with my peers’ perspectives, so I jumped to the occasion.
