Rabbi Judith Hauptman. Professor of Talmud and Rabbinic Culture at the Jewish Theological Seminary, writes of her experiences in teaching an introductory course in Talmud to students at Moscow State University for the Humanities. The course, given in English, revolved around Talmudic texts in three themes— Shabbat, Passover, and Jewish marriage.

Three action - packed days of activity have finally finished at Kiryat Moriah in Jerusalem, as Limmud FSU Jerusalem 2010 came to an end on July 23, 2010. About 1200 participants from twenty-three towns and cities around Israel and from five additional countries attended 150 sessions, including 15 round-table discussions led by 250 presenters.

The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, under the leadership of Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, announced a donation of $1.1 million to the Jewish Agency for Israel to support the Heftziba network of Jewish day schools in the former Soviet Union. This comes in addition to the $400,000 in support to the school network given earlier this year by the Fellowship.

This summer a group of youths from the North American Russian Jewish community attended the two-week (July 19-Aug. 3, 2009) Havurah camping program at Camp Tel Yehudah at Barryville, N.Y. The 9th to 11th graders participated in various fun and educational activities in close contact with other campers at the Young Judea national senior leadership camp. Through a variety of innovative informal educational and recreational experiences, Havurah participants were provided an opportunity to explore and deepen their relationships with Israel, Jewish traditions, and Jewish culture and identity. The special educational curriculum tailored to the needs of Havurah’s teenage participants was developed by JAFI educators.

With the opening of the 2009-10 school year, 5 more elementary schools around the FSU will begin to implement the TaL Am curriculum of Hebrew language and Jewish heritage, bringing to 700 the number of FSU elementary school students studying in the TaL Am program. During the 2007 and 2008 school years, the Heftziba program - a joint project of Israel’s Ministry if Education and the Jewish Agency - and the administration of the Ohr Avner Foundation, have been implementing a pilot project of the TaL Am program in ten elementary schools. The positive results of the pilot project have brought the addition of the new schools.

On the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Jewish Autonomous Region, Limmud FSU gathered three hundred Jews in Birobidzhan to celebrate and learn about Jewish heritage, history, culture and community, and to move forward as stronger and more engaged Jews. The two-day conference included dozens of seminars, lectures and workshops, covering a wide range of topics designed to illuminate issues and educate Russian Jews in this region on their history, current affairs, the Jewish homeland, and Judaism.

Genesis Philanthropy Group, the foundation founded by five Russian oligarchs two years ago, will be sharing more of its resources with Russian-speaking Jews in its own home turf. The foundation, which has made headlines with its high-profile grants meant to strengthen Jewish identity among Russian-speaking Jews primarily in America and Israel, announced a $6 million gift to The Jewish Agency for Israel to support floundering Jewish schools and summer camps in the former Soviet Union during the next three to four years.

Both the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency for Israel have indicated that due to ongoing financial difficulties they may need to drastically curtail their operations in the FSU. These cuts would be a serious blow to both formal Jewish education and social services and significantly undermine what has been a 20-year process to build up Jewish life in the former Soviet Union since the fall of Communism.

More than 400 young Russian-speaking Jewish Americans gathered in force at The Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach, NY on Aug. 9, 2009 for 'A Taste of Limmud: 150 Years of Shalom Aleichem', a unique day of education, community-building, networking and entertainment designed to enhance and strengthen Jewish identity, involvement and community leadership.
