The Heftziba Network – a network of formal Jewish education institutions in the FSU, managed jointly by the Israel Ministry of Education and the Education Department of the Jewish Agency for Israel is made up of 45 Jewish day schools and 180 Sunday schools. The Heftziba schools implement a curriculum of Jewish and Israel-oriented education with an emphasis on Hebrew language, Jewish history and Jewish heritage and culture.

The third FSU Limmud retreat in two years was held near Moscow recently. Some 230 participants from Moscow attended the conference at a resort an hour outside the city. Organizers noted the conference was the first Limmud event conceived, organized and funded in large part on Russian soil.

This article explores how a group of women in the Former Soviet Union grapple with questions of Jewish identity and Jewish 'authenticity' as they participate in an adult Jewish learning program that employs methods of feminist pedagogy and transformative learning. The study reflects on areas of dissonance between the transformational learning process and the tenacity of the women's world assumptions that are shaped by background, history, and worldview.
