The JustCity Leadership Institute (June 23–July 7, 2019) is JTS’s pre-college program, training high school students in the fundamentals of Jewish change leadership. Each summer, JustCity brings rising juniors and seniors together to live on JTS’s New York City campus, take college-level courses, engage in social justice work, and build community through vibrant Jewish programming.

Beginning in 2019, the Certificate in Jewish Leadership for Educators will provide senior-level educators the knowledge and skills necessary for them to serve in leadership capacities. The curriculum will prepare participants to meet educational challenges facing Jewish communities in the 21st century and to embrace growth opportunities in their careers and organizations.

The Mandel Teacher Educator Institute (MTEI), now in its 23rd year. is a program that strengthens the Jewish community by developing educational leaders – “teachers of teachers” – who are spearheading powerful and innovative professional development experiences for their institutions and communities. We believe that ongoing, substantive professional development for educational leaders and teachers is central to revitalizing Jewish education. MTEI’s intensive two-year program that consists of six, 4-day seminars with assignments in the field between meetings, practicing havruta text study, investigating teaching and learning practices in small and large groups, learning skills of communication and relational learning for leaders is a building block toward this goal.

A group of over 40 educators, from ten diverse Jewish Day Schools, spent three days immersed in Research for Better Teaching’s seminar on High Impact Teacher Teams. Research for Better Teaching (RBT) is a professional development organization dedicated to improving classroom teaching and school leadership. Together with educators from Prizmah: The Center for Jewish Day Schools, these teacher teams prepared to bring back solid practices to their schools that will necessitate strong modeling of teamwork among educators while using data to inform student learning.

JCC Association of North America has announced the inaugural Sheva Center Leadership Institute for Early Childhood Professionals with the acceptance of 31 educators into a program created to build a pipeline in the field of early childhood education of prepared leadership. The Fellows are all currently educators and administrators in JCCs throughout North America.

As a foundation supporting Jewish day schools and overnight camps, AVI CHAI has always been eager to see the maximum number of participants enroll in our various professional development programs. “Filling the cohort” would obviously benefit a large number of institutions, thus increasing the impact of our philanthropy among Jewish youth. But cohort-based learning is not merely a matter of numbers. Early on, we learned that fashioning a group of professionals into an “intentional learning community” profoundly deepens the learning and enhances its durability.

Although most Jewish supplementary religious school principals have graduated from various academic training programs, there are no data about how these programs sufficiently prepare educational leaders. This study examined the essential leadership and management skills of effective Jewish religious school leaders and assessed their preparation to undertake the key challenges of this complex job. This study also investigated the principals’ perceptions about their training and whether they experienced a knowledge gap as school leaders. The respondents felt unprepared to conduct essential tasks—such as working with lay leaders, managing human resources, and planning budgets—after completing their training programs.
