Over 70 young people from Russia and the CIS participated last week in a leadership training seminar in Moscow, part of of the School of Leadership program run by Yahad, FJC’s programs platform. The leadership program consists of four week-long seminars dispersed over two years and prepares graduates to successfully lead and nurture their Jewish communities upon completion. The participants are young Jewish people from 18 to 30 who want to make a difference in their communities and take responsibility for the administrative, educational and outreach tasks.

United Synagogue Youth’s 66th Annual International Convention in Dallas to Focus on Strengthening Teens’ Leadership Capabilities
This December 25-29, nearly 1,000 Jewish teenagers, educators, professionals, and alumni from United Synagogue Youth (USY) will gather in Dallas, TX for five days of Hanukkah celebrations, interactive learning, and hands-on social action at USY’s 66th International Convention. A program of The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ), USY is America’s largest Conservative Jewish youth group. This convention marks several firsts for the organization, from its inaugural Texas location to a new milestone in USY’s partnership with NOAM, its sister youth movement that reaches Masorti teens globally. USY will host young adults from ten countries including Israel, Argentina, Ukraine, Uganda, and beyond at the convention and kick off a year-long pairing of NOAM’s global chapters with USY regions. This new program will help foster lasting relationships between Jewish teens from diverse backgrounds, as well as global learning initiatives and social action projects.

We read with interest and considerable frustration the report by Kardos and Goldring on the first phase results of the CASJE study into effective educational leadership in Jewish day schools. This is an incredibly important area that requires, at this point, less research and more action. How will the knowledge derived from this study and a number of other studies of Jewish educational leadership, as well as hundreds of studies of educational leadership in general, reach these school leaders? Where will they go to find it? And why would most of them even look? They’re pretty busy already.

Hillel International Launches Extensive Professional Development Program to Train Future Jewish Leaders
Hillel International today launches Hillel U – a cutting-edge professional continuing education program that will be among the most extensive in the Jewish communal world. Hillel U will enhance Hillel’s ability to retain top tier talent, and allow it to better serve students on hundreds of campuses across the country and around the world. The program, which is initially funded with $10 million in new investments, will launch at the Hillel International Global Assembly in Orlando next month. Thanks in part to a launch gift from The Leonard J. Kaplan Fund of the Jewish Foundation of Greensboro, Hillel U will build community and collaboration among the 1,000 professionals working for Hillel on campus and its Schusterman International Center through in-person and online courses, convenings and immersive experiences.

A fourth cohort of Lekhu Lakhem, a program that prepares JCC-affiliated and independent Jewish camp directors as Jewish educational leaders launched on Monday, Sept. 19, 2016. Lekhu Lakhem, a program of JCC Association and the Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC) is a two-and-a-half year professional development program for Jewish camp directors (and selected assistant directors) jointly sponsored by the two organizations and funded through a generous grant from The AVI CHAI Foundation. The name Lekhu Lakhem is Hebrew for “go forth,” an allusion to the Biblical command (in Genesis 12:1) to Abraham and Sarah to set out on the journey that would lead to the establishment of the Jewish people. The program is designed to lead top camp professionals on a journey that will deepen their understanding and appreciation of Jewish tradition, practice, history and literature. Lekhu Lakhem helps the directors to understand that they serve in their camps as Jewish role models and educators.

The Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project (JWRP) and Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs launched an expanded initiative today to provide 5,600 women from 26 countries with eight-day trips to Israel that will inspire them as family and community leaders to make a greater impact. The ministry and JRWP unveiled the $12.5 million global expansion of the JWRP’s Momentum Israel experiences for women at a ceremony during the AIPAC annual policy conference.

The MOFET International Leadership Seminar in Israel for Jewish educators and community leaders (July 18-27, 2016 ) will deal with issues and models of Jewish leadership throughout the history of the Jewish people, up to the present time, examining the participants' management and leadership styles and helping them promote community leadership in the roles they are currently performing or will perform in the future.

When the two of us from Prozdor of Hebrew College and the Eli and Bessie Cohen Camps got together in the fall of 2013 to brainstorm a new collaboration to help teach the Cohen Camps’ Dor L’Dor Leadership program participants about leadership and Israel, we immediately arrived at a proposal to try something that had never been done before – a blended learning course on those very topics. Combining online learning with the experiential components of Israel and the Counselor-In-Training program at camp, our idea would also feature in-person sessions at the camps in late summer. We believed that by offering this course, and a Hebrew College credential to the students who completed it, we would motivate the participants to enroll in the class to get an extra leg up in their applications to college. This partnership enhances the already transformative experiences of camp and Israel by extending the learning and impact beyond the two months of camp and validating the experience through Hebrew College’s certification.

Summer is the perfect time for day school leaders to reflect, dream, and plan on how to strengthen and improve their schools in the coming year. To help them do just that, AVI CHAI sponsors selected day schools leaders to attend one of two leadership institutes at The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Fifteen leaders attended the summer’s first institute, Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership (AOL), from June 21-27, 2015. The goal of the institute was to help identify areas of school improvement, establish priorities, develop strategies, and build a base of support around a change initiative.
