“I’m Going to Israel and All I Need to Pack Is My Imagination”: Pretend Trips to Israel in Jewish Early Childhood Education
This article examines the practice of pretend Israel trips in Jewish early childhood education. Jewish early childhood educators who work in markedly different preschool settings, and who have differing beliefs about Israel and Israel education, nonetheless converge on a practice of pretend trips to Israel that remains remarkably stable across settings. This article examines how and why these pretend trips have become part of the “grammar” of Jewish early childhood education, illuminating a practice that is simultaneously beloved and unsatisfying for Jewish early childhood educators who care about early childhood education and Israel education.

n a place where the Chanukah aisle at Target is tiny, like the kosher aisle in the local supermarket, Jewish parenting means being proactive. “Here in Portland, we constantly have to analyze and ask ourselves, ‘If it’s so hard, why am I doing it? Does Judaism really matter to me?’” It’s a question that many Jewish parents ask, and one that has brought three leading Jewish organizations together to help parents explore. Yaldeinu, the brainchild of The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, the Avi Chai Foundation, and the Kohelet Foundation, is an innovative leadership forum now halfway through its two-year pilot phase.

Based on different development theories that combine nature and human psychology, nature-oriented methods of education have started to emerge. The subject of nature-oriented preschools addressed in this study comprises two aspects: (1) the psychological developmental theories that create the theoretical background for the insertion of human-nature interactions and their effects on the preschool children, especially on their socio-emotional development, and (2) a literature review of the theories dealing with the impact of nature on people, including the effects of both flora and fauna. The study presented here is part of a larger research plan investigating the effects of nature-oriented preschool system on several socio-emotional aspects of Israeli children.

The Early Childhood Institute at Hebrew College will hold its Seventh Annual Early Childhood Jewish Education Conference on Monday-Tuesday, December 12 and 13, 2016, at Hebrew College, 160 Herrick Road, in Newton, Massachusetts. The theme for this year's conference is 'Miracles and Wonders' (Nisim V'Niflaot). We will explore ways to discover and appreciate the miracles in nature and the Jewish tradition, and the wonderful aspects of our students, their families, and their cultural diversity. In addition to a diverse variety of session topics related to Miracles and Wonders for new and veteran educators, this year there will be a Director's Track, a Torah Godly Play Track, a Gisha (Access) Special Needs Track that will be run in partnership with Gateways, and a Nature Track.

Israel's first science and technology preschool was inaugurated in Beersheba recently as part of a new government initiative called Madakids. Instead of puzzles, coloring sheets and learning blocks, preschoolers will be exposed to robotics, computers and space exploration. The goal of Madakids ('mada' means science in Hebrew) is to introduce scientific subject matters to young Israelis at the earliest possible age. This, administrators hope, will help produce the next generation of Israeli scientists. The Beersheba preschool is a collaboration of the American aerospace giant Lockheed Martin, the Beersheba municipality, the Rashi Foundation, the Education Ministry, and the Science, Technology and Space Ministry.

This year’s Early Childhood Conference, Hiburim: Using Connections to Strengthen Our Communities, on October 26-7, 2015 is designed to connect you as an individual and as an educator to other people, resources, and big ideas. According to Jewish tradition, our relationships can be categorized into three types of connections or relationships: between a person and one’s self, between a person and others and between a person and the Divine. Building on these relationships we will explore how the three are interconnected and identify new forms of connections that are relevant to our generation.

The Knesset Finance Committee budgeted 1.3 billion NIS to finance the construction of hundreds of new kindergartens in compliance with the newly passed compulsory education law, guaranteeing free kindergartens from the age of three throughout Israel. Construction will commence immediately on about 500 kindergartens which should be ready by the beginning of the next school year. Hundreds of kindergarten teachers are needed so staff these kindergartens.
