School’s Place in Nurturing Students’ Jewish Identity Within a Broader Social and Cultural World: Stakeholders’ Experience
This article reports on students’ and faculty members’ experience of their pluralistic Jewish day school’s educational mission to nurture students’ Jewish identity exploration within a broader social and cultural world. It articulates these stakeholders’ perceptions of the ways teaching and learning of Jewish values, customs, and knowledge are integrated into the formal and informal educational experiences. Furthermore, it identifies five key features that contribute, mainly positively, to students’ exploration. of a broader Jewish, Australian, and global identity formation. It argues that a close alignment between stakeholders’ personal views and beliefs and their experience of the implemented educational mission, is a major contributing factor in stakeholder satisfaction with Jewish day school education.

From Day School to High School: An Exploratory Study on Jewish Adolescent Girls’ Identity Development
What does it mean to be a Jewish girl today and how do Jewish adolescent girls navigate their identity? This study is exploratory and designed to understand how three girls, who are recent day school graduates, experience the process of identity development as they begin high school. While the sample is small, the study reveals new directions for looking at Jewish girls and questions that need to be asked when researching their lives. It concludes with a few suggestions for thinking about how to conduct future research with Jewish girls.

This special issue of Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education, presents theoretical and empirical scholarship on some of the most pressing issues within the field of Jewish education today. If much of 20th-century Jewish communal discourse centered around who was a legitimate member of the community, the articles in this issue reflect a dramatic shift in favor of more experiential and fluid paradigms of identities that capture the dynamic nature of living as a Jew in culturally diverse societies.
