Mid-Atlantic New Alternatives in Jewish Education (MANAJE) Conference

In the wake of the canceling of the annual CAJE Conference and the ultimate closure of National CAJE, a group of veteran CAJE members maintained an online discourse on how to continue the CAJE tradition. It was decided to hold a mini-conference to continue to provide professional development and networking opportunities for Jewish educators and to jointly explore ways to encourage and enable the next generation of Jewish educators. The conference, organized by the Mid-Atlantic Regional CAJE, will be held on August 9-12, 2009 at the Pearlstone Conference and Retreat Center in suburban Baltimore, MD.

O.U. Proposes Measures to Increase Yeshiva Revenues and Reduce Tuition

In order to help meet the economic crisis facing yeshivot and day schools, Rabbi Saul Zucker, Director of the Department of Day School and Educational Services of the O. U., presented a package of school cost-saving measures to a gathering of Jewish education officials in Los Angeles. In addition, Zucker proposed a model for a new stripped down, no-frills kind of yeshiva to prevent parent flight in the face of rising tuitions.

Back to School: Jewish Day School in the Lives of Adult Jews

In Back to School, authors Alex Pomson and Randal F. Schnoor argue that the Jewish day school serves as an unconventional site for creating religious meaning in new ways by bringing adults and children together for education, meeting, study, and worship-like ceremonies. They suggest that day school functions as a locus of Jewish identity akin to the Jewish streets or neighborhoods that existed in many major North American cities in the first half of the twentieth century.

Online Studies toward a Specialization Certificate in the Didactics of Teaching Hebrew as a Foreign Language

The Online Academy for Jewish Studies at The MOFET Institute under the supervision of the Israel Ministry of Education has developed an online program whose aim is to assist teachers of Hebrew as a Foreign Language in the Diaspora. Teachers completing the course of study and fulfilling the practicum requirements will be eligible to receive a Specialization Certificate in the Didactics of Teaching Hebrew as a Foreign Language from the Online Academy.

Smart Education - The Interactive Whiteboard as a Lever for the Advancement of Education and Learning

On Thursday March 30, 2009, The Shaar Hanegev Middle School hosted a conference for principals and edtech coordinators of the Southern Region of Israel. The conference, sponsored by Kadima Mada - (Science Journey) and the Southern Region Executive of the Ministry of Education aimed to acquaint the participants with Kadima Mada's Smart Classroom Pilot Project which had been underway in 6 Israeli schools since 2008 in preparation for expansion of the project to tens of schools in the southern and northern regions of Israel during the next school year.
