MOFET International Educators Train Jewish Studies Teachers at World ORT Seminars

Over the last years World ORT has been sponsoring seminars for teachers of Jewish Studies in different locations around the world in order to keep them kept abreast of innovations in teaching and to enrich their professional toolboxes. In recent years, these seminars have focused on the use of technology in the teaching of Jewish Studies. Since 2007 teacher educators from the MOFET Institute's International Channel have been teaching at these seminars. Two of them, Dr. Elaine Hoter and Reuven Werber, report their impressions of the experience as well as of the nature, products, and educational significance of the activity.

Teacher Retention and Career Commitments Among DeLeT Graduates: The Intersection of Teachers' Background, Preparation for Teaching, and School Context

This article analyzes the career commitments and retention patterns among graduates of the DeLeT program (Day School Leadership Through Teaching) who were prepared for day-school teaching at Brandeis University and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. The findings suggest that those who stay in Jewish day school teaching are likely to do so because of more commitment to the Jewish community, greater perception of effective teacher preparation experience, and better school support in comparison to those who leave teaching in this setting

Free Taglit-Birthright Tour Takes People With Special Needs to Holy Land

Twenty eight young adults with special needs, are in for an Israel experience designed to connect them with their heritage and the community as much as possible on a special Chabad-Lubavitch run Friendship Circle/Taglit-Birthright Israel trip. Now in its fourth year, the free trip gives young people with special needs the opportunity to take part in the carefully-tailored program.

First Accredited Online Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic Courses Offered by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and eTeacherGroup

Starting January 2010, the Hebrew University , in collaboration with eTeacher, has begun offering its very first accredited online Biblical languages courses to overseas students. The Biblical Hebrew online program, facilitated by eTeacher's Biblical Hebrew campus is now part of the Hebrew university accredited courses and is fully recognized by the faculty of humanities. In accordance with the University's academic requirements the program includes obligatory attendance, paper submissions and examinations and will award students 3 credit points.

Renew and Reflect: R and R for Jewish Education Mentors

Research typically has focused on the benefits of mentoring for those who are mentored by more experienced educators (Odell & Huling, 2000; Feiman-Nemser, 2001). Few studies examine the inherent benefits for the mentors. This study investigates the benefit of the mentoring experience for the veteran educator. It analyzes how the experience has changed the way the mentors view themselves as educational leaders. Based on group and individual interviews, written documents and surveys, the data reveal the personal and professional significance of being part of a structured mentoring community.

ISTE 2011: Jewish Educators Network Summary

A record crowd of over 65 Jewish school educators convened at this year’s Jewish Educators Network Birds of a Feather at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference in Philadelphia this summer. Participants included veteran attendees, new friends, and Fellows from Avi ChaiI and PELIE. About 2/3 of the participants were new to ISTE. At their meeting, the network members divided into 5 groups to discuss and share challenges that they face and to suggest solutions. Some of the discussion summaries were published online.
