HaYidion: RAVSAK's Journal of Jewish Education – Teaching Jewish History

This issue of HaYidion is devoted to teaching Jewish history. Our history is integral to who we are, yet ours is not a happy story. Thus, as many of the authors in this issue point out, it is unappealing to those whose focal point of Jewish identity, as revealed by the Pew Report, is a sense of humor. Within the pages of this issue of HaYidion are many suggestions for addressing this problem. Technology, creativity and an acknowledgement and awareness of the changing nature of the study of history provide the means by which we can make the teaching of Jewish history vibrant and meaningful.

Exploring Art, Revealing Torah

LooktoLearn integrates Jewish text, themes and values with British National Curriculum subject through the exploration of art and objects. Founded in 2009 by experienced teacher and museum educator, Nic Abery, whose strong belief in integrated education has inspired the development of this innovative learning platform. What this means is that places like the British Museum, the National Gallery and the Natural History Museum are Abery’s “classrooms,” giving Jewish students a chance to connect with their heritage in a new way.

Exclusive NYC School Opens Doors to Jewish Special-Ed Kids

Next fall, Ilan will be enrolled in The Shefa School, a new Jewish day school created specifically for students with language-based learning disabilities. Shefa (which means “abundance” in Hebrew) will open its doors in September, in space rented from Lincoln Square Synagogue on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. At the moment the school is just empty white rooms, with small, colorful plastic chairs stacked under a drop cloth on the synagogue’s second floor. But Ilana Ruskay-Kidd, the founder and head of Shefa, is excited as she shows a visitor the large balcony that looks over traffic rushing up Amsterdam Avenue and will soon host playground equipment and the congregation’s sukkah.

Holocaust Education: Analysis of Curricula and Frameworks: A Case Study of Illinois

This article addresses how far educational institutions have come in designing authentic and meaningful curricula for teaching the Holocaust at the secondary level. Examined in this article are the historical development of Holocaust education in the United States, with a focus on the state of Illinois as a case study, what contributes to the development of a full curriculum, and what constitutes the boundary between a curriculum and a framework, based on examination of the work of scholars and institutions in the field.

The Student as the 'Other' and Teacher Responsibility: Teachers' Ethical Dilemmas in National Religious Education

The article is based on a study whose aim was to understand teachers' ethical world in national-religious education in Israel by examining their stories which reflect ethical dilemmas in teaching. The methodology was qualitative. The research population included 52 teachers teaching in a variety of State-Religious schools in Israel. The research tools were semi-constructed in-depth interview and documents. The teachers' stories repeatedly addressed the basic tension between traditional-religious educational education and modern democratic education.

My Child with Autism is Going to Jewish Day School (And it’s Working!)

Our son got his first siddur (prayer book) last week, and it was–in a word–amazing. A year ago, I never would have predicted he would be up on that stage. In fact, I was convinced of just the opposite–that my son would not be attending Jewish day school at all, let alone participating in the first grade siddur ceremony. I was so convinced, I blogged about how unlikely it would be for he and our new local community Jewish day school to be a match.I’ve never been so happy to say I was wrong.

Israel's Model of Engineering Education Comes To American Jewish High Schools

Begun in 2011, the two-year CIJE-Tech High School Engineering Program currently operates in 27 Jewish schools, in areas ranging from California to North Carolina. Adam Jerozolim, a professional engineer who once designed hydraulic systems for nuclear submarines, serves as a mentor to teachers in 12 schools in the New York City area that participate in the program.

Reaching for the stars: Israeli Students to Study Space

Israeli school students will study space research in an educational program launched to coincide with Israeli Space Week this week. The new program, launched jointly by the Education Ministry and the Science, Technology and Space Ministry, will be studied by more than 150,000 students, and will cover astronomy, electro-optics, asteroid mining, the solar system and nanosatellites.

World ORT Program to Gear Israeli High Schoolers Toward Engineering

The World ORT organization for advanced science studies has launched the Anieres Elite Academy international scholarship program to prepare some 600 Israeli and foreign 10th-graders for an engineering degree at the prestigious Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. The program, the first of its kind in Israel, will allow students from the Negev to the Galilee to study science and technology in high school and, after seven years, complete an engineering degree at the Technion. The program provides a full scholarship, worth more than 100,000 shekels.

As Pew Study Raises Concerns, Invest In Jewish Day Schools

For all of us, day schools are an investment in the future. In the end, this isn’t about just preserving the identity of individual Jews. The Jewish day school is about strengthening Jewish communities — because Jewish day schools can function as core pillars of the Jewish communities they serve, places where ideas are shared and relationships made. They can help foster a sense of togetherness among Jewish families. They can be hubs for Jewish continuity, conduits to other Jewish agencies, synagogues and camps, and ultimately the mechanisms that will create the identified and engaged Jews who will support programs such as Birthright Israel for those young people that fall outside of day school reach.
