Five young, passionate and exceptional Jewish educators making impact today, and holding great promise to be leaders in the field in the future, are the 2014 recipients of The Covenant Foundation’s Pomegranate Prize. The Pomegranate Prize was established in 2011 and recognizes emerging leaders in Jewish education – those in the field for 10 years or less. The Prize stands next to The Covenant Award, which since 1991 has honored three exemplary Jewish educators each year for their records of innovation and impact across Jewish education settings.

Three visionary educators demonstrating the power of inspired Jewish education are the 2014 recipients of The Covenant Award for excellence in the field, The Covenant Foundation announced today. Alison Kur, Executive Director of Jewish Living at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, MA; Dr. Rebecca Schorsch, Director of Jewish Studies at Chicagoland Jewish High School in Deerfield, IL; and Rabbi Yisroel Boruch Sufrin, Head of School at Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy in Beverly Hills, CA, are the recipients of the Award, among the most coveted of honors in the field of Jewish education.

The Covenant Foundation announced $1.6 million in new grants today as part of its mission to support and advance excellence and impact in Jewish education. From schools to synagogues and beyond, the new round of grants underscores a commitment to initiatives across the landscape of Jewish educational settings, experiences and audiences. Innovative work in technology, new media, the arts, youth and family engagement, and community building are each part of a re-imagined toolkit propelling the field of Jewish education forward.

The Foundation announced the establishment of the new prize - and the inaugural recipients – at its annual award ceremony during the General Assembly of the Jewish Federations of North America in Denver, CO.

Three exceptional educators from across the spectrum of Jewish life are 2011 recipients of the Covenant Award for committing to excellence in Jewish education and pursuing innovative approaches that inspire and empower students, colleagues and community. Rabbi Eve Ben-Ora, Jewish Educator at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco; Amy Skopp Cooper, Director of Ramah Day Camp in Nyack (New York) and Assistant Director of the National Ramah Commission; and Rabbi Shai Held, Dean, and Chair in Jewish Thought at Mechon Hadar in New York City are the 2011 recipients. The three recipients join 60 other Jewish educators honored with a Covenant Award since the Foundation established the citation in 1991. Each will receive $36,000, and each of their institutions will receive $5,000
