As part of its Bridging Scholarship and Pedagogy in Jewish Studies Initiative, The Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education, Brandeis University convened a research conference - Teaching Rabbinic Literature: Bridging Scholarship and Pedagogy on January 27-28, 2008.

This conference brought together 200 academics and educators representing 30 Jewish day schools, 20 universities, 12 yeshivot and rabbinical seminaries from across the denominations, and numerous other educational institutions to explore research and develop ideas about the purposes and practices of teaching rabbinic literature.

The conference program included a mix of concurrent and plenary sessions. At the concurrent sessions, presenters – day school teachers and educational leaders, professors of rabbinics, instructors in rabbinical schools and synagogue rabbis – shared ideas and arguments, sometimes frontally and sometimes interactively. In every instance, there was time for responses and discussion. In the plenary sessions, the whole group came together for a shared exploration of some of the central themes of the conference.

The conference was designed to contribute to the further development of scholarship on the teaching of rabbinic literature through the publication of papers and presentations.

The conference program book, including program schedule, abstracts, and presenter bios is available online.

Video clips of the sessions and discussions of the conference have been made available online for the benefit of the Jewish education community.

A description of the rationale of The Mandel Center's Bridging Scholarship and Pedagogy in Jewish Studies Initiative along with links to a listing of working papers and activities is also available online.
