Over 650 Jewish camp professionals and devotees gathered for the Foundation for Jewish Camp’s Leaders Assembly this week. With the tagline of “One field. Moving Forward,” the conference featured an impressive array of speakers and skill-builders inside and outside the camping world, and even an Israel night with David Broza. A myriad of attendee-suggested and peer-led “hot topic” sessions addressed issues from “Living Jewishly All Year” to “What’s Your Israel Connection?” to “Institutional Collaborations to Strengthen Staffing.”

AVI CHAI awarded scholarships to ten Jewish day school administrators for this year’s ISTE conference, which took place from June 23-26 in San Antonio, Texas. Taking on the ISTE tagline, “Connected Learning. Connected World,” some of these AVI CHAI sponsored attendees have shared noteworthy conference take-aways and musings on the AVI CHAI Ed Tech Blog.

In the course of the past seven years, the central focus of AVI CHAI’s work in the FSU has turned to reaching out to the widest and most diverse Jewish audience, which represents the overwhelming majority of post-Soviet Jewry. By extending beyond conventional Jewish establishment activities, we have identified what may be a golden opportunity to reach those young, well-educated Jews who rarely, if ever, participate in organized Jewish activity, and for whom the term “hidden Jews” is perhaps most applicable. These programs, all led by local Jewish leadership, are unique in Russia, paving the path to what we hope will be a model that can be strengthened and expanded in years to come.
