This special series of the Azrieli Papers highlights the ways in which Covid-19 prompted an examination of Jewish education, including practices and underlying philosophies. The essays in this and the following two volumes offer a view of the lessons we have learned in these uncertain times and the opportunities we have uncovered. Each essay begins with a discussion by educators and educational consumers “on the ground”—sharing their experiences and thoughts. These essays are paired with a companion article by an Azrieli or YU faculty member, offering their thoughts as well as providing research, readings and resources to expand on the topic.

The response of clinical practice curriculum in teacher education to the Covid-19 breakout: A case study from Israel
This case study explores how teacher education curriculum in a college in Israel responded to the Covid-19 outbreak. The article focuses on the clinical component of the preservice curriculum (practice teaching and methods courses). It reveals that curriculum became malleable in two major ways: there was (1) a shift to learner-centered well-being and social emotional learning (SEL); and (2) an adaptation of teaching methods.

Six months ago, when we first began planning this issue, we were focused on resilience of individuals, particularly in educational setting. The original introduction included a story about a thirteen- year-old who had a bad morning and didn’t want to go to school, who ultimately pulled herself together and had a fabulous day. The articles we looked for included personal stories about resilience, educational strategies for building resilience, and whether resilience can be taught. Little did we, or anyone, understand then just how critical this topic would become in such a short period of time.

There have been several recent articles about the potential held by Social and Emotional Learning methodologies and power these have when combined with an overlay of positive values. While values education has become prominent in Jewish education, SEL is still somewhat novel and deserves more attention.
