Portraits of Jewish Learning project (PJL) will commission 6-8 papers from educators in various settings that (1) describe how learning occurs in Jewish education and (2) help to deepen the discussion of what we mean by Jewish learning. An honorarium will be awarded to authors of commissioned papers.
We invite researchers, and practitioners interested in research, who want to develop a narrative about Jewish learning. Applicants should plan to be (or recently have been) systematically documenting the experience of learners (of any background, from preschoolers to adults) in any Jewish educational context (e.g., school, afterschool, camp, retreat, family education, adult learning, online, etc.).
Rather than testing a particular learning theory per se, applicants should be interested in describing learning in their (or a) particular setting and reflecting about conceptual frameworks that might be suggested by the data. Participants will translate their scholarship into materials suitable for a “non-academic” audience—to make their research and reflections accessible to practitioners, policy makers, lay leaders, parents, and the learners themselves.
Author of commissioned papers will participate in periodic conference calls to work collaboratively with other PJL team members, to give and receive feedback, and to benefit from shared conversation about the issues that emerge from the work.
The PJL Application is due October 1, 2016. We will contact selected applicants for more information by mid-October and will select project participants by November 1, 2016.
Draft papers (25-30 pages) will be due no later than June 1, 2017. Project staff will review submissions for possible editing and publication.
