In recent years, Chicago Jewish early childhood leaders (directors, lay people, and educators) have been gathering together to seek knowledge, support, and understanding. Their work has addressed several needs in our system: cultivating a shared sense of responsibility for each early childhood center, identifying and nurturing future leaders, helping leaders develop non-profit management skills, retaining directors through the challenges of leading a family center, developing an inspired vision for excellence in teaching and learning, and recruiting new teachers.

The PEJE Leadership Line is a free one-hour phone call with a PEJE coach who has broad and extensive expertise. To date, day school leaders have dialed in regarding topics from board development to head support/evaluation to student recruitment/retention. Callers have included heads of school, board chairs, and development and admission officers.

Rabbi Shalom Berger, moderator of Lookjed, Lookstein Center's Jewish Education Listserve, sparked an online discussion by sharing a suggested approach to a pressing educational challenge. Stuart Zweiter, Director of the Lookstein Center, recently posted an essay on ejewishphilanthropy entitled 'Are We Not on the Wrong Track?' which raises the issue of funding priorities for day schools. In a blog post on the URJ blog, Dr. Jonathan Woocher, Chief Ideas Officer and Director of the Lippman Kanfer Institute at JESNA, calls for a reinventing of Jewish education. That isn't because Jewish education today is bad; it's because it can be much, much better than it is. In order to have Jewish education serve the needs of the 21st century North American Jewish people, it is necessary to accelerate a few paradigm shifts that are already under way.

Yoav Friedman writes in Ynet about US families making Aliya to Israel in order to provide affordable Jewish education for their children. ' With Jewish school tuition fees per child reaching $20,000 a year, many families prefer to make aliyah and get free education. We met some of them onboard Nefesh B'Nefesh flight carrying 250 new olim to Israel.'

The 2011 Challenge Award for North American Jewish Day Schools was designed to encourage day schools to pursue new and creative initiatives that boost financial sustainability. PEJE will award $625,000, in gifts of $25,000, to 25 schools that implement within 2011 programs achieving one or more of the following goals: increasing key revenue streams of either tuition, annual campaign, or endowment and legacy; creatively responding to the middle-class affordability challenge resulting in increased dollars invested in school or increased enrollment; and producing a bold advocacy campaign that results either in increased inquiries, tours, applications, or enrollment; or reducing attrition.

Hundreds of high school students from around the world debated important issues as part of Yeshiva University’s 21st National Model U.N. (YUNMUN) from February 6-8, 2011. The students, from nearly 50 different high schools from four continents, represented nearly all of the United Nations’ member countries in 15 different committees, and debated topics ranging from the peaceful uses of outer space to the elimination of discrimination against women. The annual event, the largest Jewish high school event of its kind, took place at the Stamford Plaza Hotel in Stamford, Conn.
