The immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel has been a mixed success story: on the one hand, statistics show that the majority of members of the community are working; on the other hand, the jobs they are doing are not the high-quality ones hoped for by all Israelis. To correct that, the government announced this week that it would spend NIS 55 million ($14 million) on programs to improve the work status of Ethiopian immigrants. Job training, academic programs, and grants to employers for hiring workers of Ethiopian descent are all part of the new effort initiated by the government Ministerial Committee on the Integration of Israeli Citizens of Ethiopian Descent into Israeli Society.

Israel’s first college aimed specifically at students with autism, Asperger’s syndrome and complex learning disabilities is set to open in March 2016. According to the NRG news website, the BE Academic College will be a collaboration between Beit Ekstein, an organization that provides services to people with a variety of learning and developmental disabilities, and the Open University, a distance-learning institution with branches throughout the country. The new institution will be housed at Beit Ekstein’s campus in Givatayim, a suburb of Tel Aviv. It will offer three interdisciplinary tracks meant to prepare its target population for the workforce. The programs announced by the academy are psychology and education, economics and computer science, and psychology and communications.

In response to a sharp falloff in the number of students who “major” in mathematics in high school, Israel Minister of Education, Naftali Bennett, announced this week a new program that will significantly increase funding for math education; double the number of math teachers in schools; draft hundreds of high-tech workers to help teachers and students teach and learn math; — and incentivize students by providing photo-ops with former president Shimon Peres, who, despite his 91 years, feels strong enough about the project to come out of retirement and help out.

In a bid to ensure that Israel retains its edge in cyber-security, the Science and Technology Ministry recently signed a deal with Lockheed Martin to produce educational curricula in science and technology, with an emphasis on teaching the principles of cyber-security. The objective is to create a new generation of tech experts who will ensure that Israel remains a leader in technology development – especially in cyber-security. There are currently more than 300 cyber-security start-ups in Israel, and those companies, along with veteran security firms like CheckPoint, attracted 10% of all cyber-security investments worldwide, government statistics show.

The internet abounds with dangers for unwary users and is especially perilous for children whose inexperience renders them vulnerable to hackers, bullies, and pedophiles or worse. In response, an Israeli nonprofit called Red Button has produced the world’s first app that lets anyone, especially kids, easily report negative web behavior. The Red Button app installs itself as a service on Android devices, and there is also an add-on version for popular web browsers like Firefox and Chrome. If an individual comes across something or someone they are uncomfortable with – such as a person who is cursing, threatening, intimidating, or inappropriately discussing personal issues – all they have to do is press a button to begin a process that can lead to taking the offending site down or arresting the offending individual.

MBA students who want to work in Israel on an internship now have an online resource that will help them make the right match. InsideIL is a new website and nonprofit organization with an online matching platform that helps students find internships at Israeli companies across a variety of industries including biotechnology, cyber security, venture capital, and e-commerce.

The Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) recently organized its first tech trip to Israel for Yeshiva high school students. Called CIJE-Tech: Journey to the Start-Up Nation, the ten-day program, which concluded last week, was the latest effort by CJIE to get kids interested in and excited about science and technology, helping them to prepare for the STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – careers of the 21st century.

Many kids complain about being stuck at school, but for some, like those laid up in the hospital for long periods, going to school is a privilege they can only wish for. To help kids who are long-term residents of Schneider Children’s Hospital in central Israel, electronics giant Samsung and Israeli e-book distributor E-vrit are teaming up to provide an educational experience that will allow them to keep up with their classmates.

Kids who want to know more about ancient Israel but can’t get out into the field can now dig into a new app put out by the Israel Archaeological Authority. Dig Quest, available for iPhone and iPad (Android on the way) devices, lets kids assemble puzzles, search for ancient artifacts, and thumb through the Dead Sea Scrolls to discover Israel’s hidden treasures.
