Learning Standards in a Non-Standard System: Mapping Student Knowledge and Comprehension in Ultra-Orthodox Talmud Torah Schools
The Jewish ultra-orthodox (Haredi) Talmud Torah schools have been consistently resistant to the process of standardization in content, measurement, and evaluation, in contrast to the Israeli state education system which has progressed steadily in these areas. Talmud Torah schools are private elementary schools for ultra-orthodox boys. Studies are religious and the main subject of study is the Gemara (Talmud). For religious and ideological reasons these schools insist on total independence at all levels and resist assessment or regulation of any kind and as a result have rarely been studied by Israeli or international researchers. The present study examined the contribution of a unique Gemara study program to a sample of 159 sixth grade boys in Talmud Torah schools.

In the present study, the levels of spirituality and humanistic values of first-year university students, graduates of state secular, state religious and ultra-orthodox schools were compared. Results of the study indicate that graduates of the state religious school sector hold higher attitudinal levels on spirituality and humanistic values than graduates of both secular and ultra-orthodox school sectors. In addition, graduates of ultra-orthodox schools have higher attitudinal levels of spirituality than graduates of state secular school who in turn have higher attitudinal perceptions of humanistic values than their ultra-orthodox counterparts.

The federal model of the Israeli state education system does not augur well for religious encounters in Israeli schools. The fact that on the one hand, religious and heritage education is a mandatory core subject for all sectors in the Israeli state education system, but on the other, each sector maintains a unique sectorial ideology regarding the understanding of what religious and heritage education should convey to the students, leads to an inherent diffculty to contemplate or organize interfaith or intersector religious encounters. The declared policy of the Israeli Ministry of Education, according to which all schools are required to educate toward the enhancement of social cohesion and a broadly common perception of constructive values and citizenship (Ministry of Education, 1996), recognizes the diffculty of conducting interfaith encounters at the school level.
