CASJE Invites Another Round of Proposals for Research That Will Contribute to the Practice of Jewish Education
CASJE (Consortium for Applied Studies in Jewish Education) released a request for proposals (RFP) to promote research that can make a difference in how Jewish education is practiced. Up to two grants up to $30,000 each will be awarded to stimulate time-concentrated research that is clearly connected to one of CASJE’s areas of focus, and that will apply to the practice of Jewish education. Areas of inquiry currently supported by CASJE include: Jewish educational leadership, Jewish early childhood education, Hebrew language education, Israel education, and the career trajectories of Jewish educators.

CASJE (The Consortium for Applied Studies in Jewish Education) today announced three grants for research projects focused on the practice of Jewish education. The grants, up to $30,000 each, were selected from proposals submitted in response to an open call. The winning projects cover different age groups and settings of Jewish education, will be completed by the end of 2019, and will be shared broadly with the field.

Since 2013, Hebrew Academy has invested heavily into expanding its character education curriculum and programming spearheaded by the School Psychologists. At the Elementary level, thanks to a prior Day School enhancement grant, Hebrew Academy launched and implemented Project Gevurah, a Positive Behavioral Support program explicitly teaching students what behaviors in different school settings demonstrate respect, responsibility, and safety. Additionally, in 2016, Hebrew Academy introduced the cloud9world program introducing students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade to different character traits throughout the year including gratitude, compassion, courage, kindness, amongst others. In the Middle School, in 2016, Hebrew Academy introduced the Social Emotional Learning Foundations SELF program which is a weekly class designed around the Character Lab led by Angela Duckworth.

The Center for Israel Education (CIE) has trained thousands of educators with effective strategies for teaching Israeli history, politics, economics, and culture. Now, through a generous grant, CIE is able to extend our impact to meet schools where they are and guide them to achieve new successes in the teaching and learning of Israel. Over the next three years, CIE will mentor the faculty of eight schools to enhance their teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogic approaches leading them to create new impactful Israel curricula for all ages. We will be visiting schools in the U.S and Canada to deliver customized professional development and resources for teachers of Judaics, Hebrew, social studies, science, art, and more.

The AVI CHAI Foundation has, since 2012, been making a wide variety of grants in the area of blended learning. Our focus is on helping teachers use technology to promote personalized learning in their classrooms and assisting teachers in using systematically collected student data to drive their instruction. But this post isn’t about the advantages and risks associated with blended personalized learning. Instead, it’s about the changes we are seeing (and not seeing) in classrooms.

This planning process—supported by The Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life, The AVI CHAI Foundation, and Jim Joseph Foundation—builds on CASJE’s previously commissioned reviews of research that can inform the teaching and learning of Hebrew.

n a place where the Chanukah aisle at Target is tiny, like the kosher aisle in the local supermarket, Jewish parenting means being proactive. “Here in Portland, we constantly have to analyze and ask ourselves, ‘If it’s so hard, why am I doing it? Does Judaism really matter to me?’” It’s a question that many Jewish parents ask, and one that has brought three leading Jewish organizations together to help parents explore. Yaldeinu, the brainchild of The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, the Avi Chai Foundation, and the Kohelet Foundation, is an innovative leadership forum now halfway through its two-year pilot phase.

In August, The Jewish Education Project proudly launched the Tech for Learning Initiative Summer Institute, supported by the Jim Joseph Foundation. Teams of educators from nine Jewish day schools came together at our Manhattan office for a three-day intensive learning experience that focused on meaningful use of technology in the classroom and culminated in a micro-grant application process. The participating schools were at very different points in their technology integration journeys and came from different denominations and regions within the Tri-State area.

Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies Receives Two-Year Grant from The AVI CHAI Foundation to Support the Pardes Tefilah Initiative
The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies is proud to announce the awarding of a two-year grant from The AVI CHAI Foundation. The grant will provide support and direction to day schools and other Jewish educational institutions in the area of tefilah (prayer) through the Pardes Tefilah Education Initiative.
