The Covenant Foundation gave out its annual Covenant Awards for innovative Jewish educators Sunday night at the Marriot Hotel in Washington, D.C., where the Jewish Federations of North America held its annual General Assembly. Dr. Erica Brown, Scholar-in-Residence at the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and Director of Adult Education at the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning; Rabbi Stuart Seltzer, Dean of Judaic Studies at the Shoshana S. Cardin School in Baltimore; and Nili Simhai, Director of the Teva Learning Center in New York are the 2009 awardees. Each of the recipients will receive $36,00 as well as $5,000 for their institutions.

For the fourth year, Canfei Nesharim is appreciating the importance of water through our annual Sukkot project, True Joy Through Water. Divrei Torah, program suggestions, stickers and Sukkah decorations are currently available on their website, and great more resources are coming soon.

Canfei Nesharim is accepting applications from synagogues to join their 2009-10 Synagogues Pilot, the second phase of the Synagogue Pilot, to run Torah-based environmental programs in their communities. The participating synagogues will carry out a full year-long series of programs on the environment related to themes in the Jewish year, designed by Canfei Nesharim and implemented in seven synagogues around the US during this year's first phase of the pilot.

Every 28 years, the Jewish community celebrates the return of the sun to its original place in the heavens at the precise time and day of its creation. This celebration is called Birkat Hahammah - blessing of the Sun. The next date on which we mark this moment is April 8, 2009, the day before Passover. This site, developed by a coalition of Jewish environmental organizations, is dedicated to help mark this amazing day.
