Ezra Glinter writes in the Forward about a group of young farmers who are launching Yiddish Farm, a new experiment in Jewish agriculture, in the foothills of the Catskills, some 50 miles northwest of Manhattan. They aim to create both an immersive environment for speaking and learning Yiddish and a model of sustainable agriculture. In this, their first real season, they have attracted a handful of full-time participants to live and work on their property in Goshen, NY for the summer.

On Tu B'shvat this year (Jan. 20, 2011) the Biology Inspectorate of the Israeli Ministry of Education held an online synchronous activity for High School students around the country. At 10:00 AM Amir Balaban of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel gave a presentation on Urban Nature. That was followed by an interactive competitive quiz between the participating students.

Torah Flora is a website devoted to Biblical ethnobotany, a way of using the tools of botany and ethnobotany to help us better understand the Torah. This includes such things as identifying the plants and other natural phenomena mentioned in the Tanach (Jewish Bible), using information about these plants to shed light on their use in prophetic metaphor, and studying the plants involved in performing various mitzvot in order to better appreciate and perform those mitzvot.

The Israeli Chief Rabbinate is embarking on a new initiative led by Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger to revoke kosher certificates from fruit and vegetable growers who overuse pesticides. If the initiative is authorized, it will be the first time the Chief Rabbinate stipulates conditions not directly related to kosher laws for the issuance of a kosher certificate.
