On Tu B'shvat this year (Jan. 20, 2011) the Biology Inspectorate of the Israeli Ministry of Education held an online synchronous activity for High School students around the country. At 10:00 AM Amir Balaban of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, gave a presentation on Urban Nature. That was followed by an interactive competitive quiz between the participating students.

The activity was broadcast on the synchronous website of the Center of Educational Technology using the AT&T Connect synchronous communication platform. Each school connected to the interactive platform with a high speed internet connection on a computer connected to a projector, loudspeakers and a microphone to allow two-way interactive audio-visual communication.

The Biology Inspectorate sees the encouragement of the awareness of man about his responsibility to nature and its preservation as one of its main objectives. Tu B'shvat, a traditional Jewish holiday celebrating nature and environment, is seen as an excellent opportunity to carry out this nationwide educational activity.
