Survey Points to 'Lost Generation' of Israeli Jews

Italian Jews Training to Work in Jewish Media

Study: 83% of Israeli Students Want More Lessons on Holocaust

A two year study of over 2500 Israeli high school students and hundreds of high school teachers and administrators found that 83% of the students want more lessons on Holocaust and 80% believe that learning about the Holocaust is relevant to their lives. Most of those who participate in school-organized trips to death camps in Poland feel more bound to universal human values.The study, conducted by Dr. Erik Cohen of the Bar Ilan University's Churgin School of Education , was presented at a teachers' conference on Holocaust education at Yad Vashem.

Chabad House in Kazakhstan 'Navigating a Spiritual Desert'

Above the synagogue, built by a donation of Eurasia Jewish Congress President Alexander Machkevich, dwells the family of Chabad emissary Rabbi Yehuda Kubalkin. Yad Vashem gets $4 million for Russian Holocaust Education

Yad Vashem has launched a comprehensive new program to raise awareness and knowledge of the Holocaust among Russian speakers. The program is funded by a four-year, $4 million grant from the Genesis Philanthropy Group (GPG), a foundation dedicated to promoting Jewish identity for Russian-speaking Jews around the world.

Reform Rabbis to be Ordained in Berlin

Three new Reform rabbis will be ordained in Berlin on June 18th, 2009 in the second such ceremony held in Germany. The Abraham Geiger College at the University of Potsdam, which is marking its 10th anniversary, will ordain Gábor Lengyel, Richard Newman and Roly Zylbersztein.

New Berlin Program Sets Historic Ordination

Two graduates of a new Berlin rabbinical program will be ordained in the first ordination of homegrown Orthodox rabbis in postwar Germany.The ceremony for the Rabbinerseminar zu Berlin will be held June 2 at the new Ohel Jacob Synagogue in Munich by the Central Council of Jews in Germany and the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, which together founded the institute.

Back to School: Jewish Day School in the Lives of Adult Jews

In Back to School, authors Alex Pomson and Randal F. Schnoor argue that the Jewish day school serves as an unconventional site for creating religious meaning in new ways by bringing adults and children together for education, meeting, study, and worship-like ceremonies. They suggest that day school functions as a locus of Jewish identity akin to the Jewish streets or neighborhoods that existed in many major North American cities in the first half of the twentieth century.

Baltimore Hebrew University, Towson Sign Merger Deal

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed recently that integrates Baltimore Hebrew University’s programs into Towson University, effective July 1, 2009. A letter recently went out from Towson’s administration welcoming BHU students to the school. Under the merger, BHU will continue to offer a master’s degree in Jewish studies, a master’s in Jewish communal service and a master’s in Jewish education. The programs will be offered under a new entity called the Baltimore Hebrew Institute (BHI) at Towson University. They will fall under Towson’s graduate offerings at its College of Liberal Arts and College of Education.
