Nishmat Ethiopian Women Program (N.E.W.)

N.E.W., run by Nishmat (a world center for Jewish education for women in Jerusalem), combines Torah learning with the keys to a better future for Ethiopian-Israeli National Service and Israel Defense Forces veterans. The program includes a second chance at high school matriculation and specialized preparation for the college entrance psychometric exam, extensive mentoring, a course in managing the family budget, and workshops dealing with domestic violence, as well as an integrated environment that offsets their sense of social isolation, and special programs to develop pride in their Ethiopian Jewish heritage.

A Census of Jewish Supplementary Schools in the United States - 2006-7

This census of Jewish supplementary schools in North America enrollment was the first to be carried out in over a quarter century. A list of schools was drawn up, based on information made available by the larger bodies of synagogues, umbrella agencies and educational organizations. Over 1700 of the approximately 2100 existing schools provided enrollment data and other information.

The Rightful Heirs of Sarah Schenirer

This article recounts the contribution of Sarah Schenirer, a modest Krakow seamstress, to a revolution in Jewish women's education in the period between the two World Wars. Her brave efforts in the founding of the Beis Yaakov schools and Teachers' Seminary provided a framework for Jewish women to attain Jewish learning. The author asks who today are the true heirs of Sarah Schenirer, continuing the legacy of her educational leadership.

Pre-Mitzvah Education in an Orthodox:- Egalitarian Community

This article describes an innovative gender-neutral program to prepare young men and women for adult Jewish life implemented at Kehilat Darchei Noam, an Orthodox synagogue in Modi'in, Israel. Gender Differences in Messages about Sexuality in Religious Education

A study based on nearly fifty in-depth interviews with Modern Orthodox men and women in Israel showed marked differences between men's and women's educational experiences in the realm of sexuality. While female interviewees often reported that throughout their schooling there were many negative messages about sexuality delivered by teachers and conveyed through the culture, none of the interviewed men reported the same kind of powerful messages in high school. The educational messages and the experiences they inform are powerfully different for men and women who studied in the religious educational system both in Israel and North America.
