School Wide Gemara Shabbat Project
Authors: Soskil Mordechai
This year I had the opportunity to help create a project that made our study of mesechet Shabbat relevant and engaging and fun for kids! At Maimonides School, the study of Talmud is a very important value. It is so important that we dedicate more time to the study of gemarah than to any other course. And yet, unbelievably, a course that some parents and students have trouble really appreciating is Talmud! So the limudei kodesh team and I set out to try and create a project that would put the students in the center, as creators of knowledge, and not just as consumers of knowledge.

In addition to overall growth in the Jewish overnight camp world, you will see a 'Tale of Two Camps'---- a recognition that while many camps are growing, some are not. The census is based on the 150 overnight camps that come under the Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC) umbrella. These camps have all met a set of criteria for inclusion. Summer 2013 continued the growth of previous years with a 2.6% increase in the number of campers at the 150 nonprofit Jewish overnight camps in JData. These camps served over 70,000 campers this past summer.

Jewish Camp Trend-Spotting: 10 Ways a Summer Ritual is Changing
Authors: Wiener Julie
Nostalgia about summer traditions notwithstanding, Jewish camps have changed dramatically from a generation ago. Camp’s value for Jewish education and identity-building is now a major focus of communal attention. Major Jewish foundations, federations and organizations are investing heavily in the sector. Many camps have become more intentional about incorporating Jewish learning, Shabbat and Israel into their programming. They’ve also evolved to meet families’ changing expectations and demands: offering a wider range of choices of all kinds (from food to activity to session length); providing more frequent updates and communications to parents; accommodating numerous medical requirements and allergies; and placing greater emphasis on safety and security.
