Facebook Israel and The National Library of Israel are embarking on a joint project to mark the start of the school year: they will upload to the social media network more than 1,000 pictures of Israeli schoolchildren taken from the 1950s to the 1990s so that users can tag themselves and tell the story behind the photos. The historical photographs will be accessible starting Monday August 26, 2019, through the National Library’s Facebook page, the social media network said in a statement.

In a first-ever hackathon for Haredi engineers and programmers, more than 200 men and women brainstormed with mentors from the Israeli tech industry for 18 hours last week — to come up with ways to inject artificial intelligence and big data sciences into the study of ancient Jewish texts. Held at the Facebook Israel headquarters in Tel Aviv, the event was organized by KamaTech, a startup accelerator for ultra-Orthodox entrepreneurs, together with Sefaria, a website for Jewish texts and translations, which allowed the developers to use its open platform to develop software programs.

The Jewish holiday of Passover is a time when the fields are still damp with rain and dotted with a myriad of multicolored flowers. It is also a time when families pack huge picnic baskets and portable barbecues and go out on trips to bask in the warm, not yet hot, weather. That is why the Israeli startup Cnature, has developed a Facebook bot — FlowerzBot — to help users identify the kind of flower they see in the field, in real time, by uploading a picture of it and getting back information on its name and qualities.

Nobel Prize winner, Professor Dan Shechtman, world-renowned for his work in chemistry and material science, says Israel must do more to promote the study of sciences to make sure it keeps its technology edge. Shechtman, who has been running a course on technological entrepreneurship at the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology for the past 30 years, has developed a plan for innovation studies for Ort Israel Sci-Tech Schools, a network of vocational schools. The program is being implemented in eight schools in Israel and the organization hopes to spread it further and globally as well.
