In this article, research on the Jewish Early Childhood Education Initiative (JECEI) is presented. JECEI was selected for study because JECEI early childhood programs are characterized by healthy relationships, the capacity to successfully promote children’s learning and development, and the engagement of families in the work of school improvement.

Ben-Avie and Comer describe how Jewish day schools and the Yale Child Study Center's School Development Program (SDP) share a common agenda regarding the aim of education. SDP, the educational change initiative founded by Comer, informed the design of the current study, which is an empirical exploration of how the climate of relationships in Jewish day schools impede or promote the process through which children forge a relationship to the Jewish people.

EJSS is a large-scale study commissioned by JESNA and conducted by Michael Ben-Avie & Jeffrey Kress that collected descriptive information about Jewish educators in Jewish day and complementary schools. EJSS is an important first step toward creating a research-based portrait of educators in Jewish schools in North America.
