Young Russian speaking Jewish leaders were trained to fight the de-legitimization of Israel during a conference held this weekend in Maastricht, Holland, organized by The Jewish Agency for Israel and the Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs Ministry. During the conference, leaders from 12 countries across Europe were trained in public diplomacy skills in the age of new media. The educational conference was intended to help develop a young Russian speaking Jewish leadership across Europe.

The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) has received two grants made in collaboration by the Koret Foundation and the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life & Culture. The $450,000 in renewed funding will support three years of discretionary special projects directed by Chancellor Arnold M. Eisen to promote innovative programs and initiatives on and off campus.

Close to 300 Russian speaking teens from around the world gathered in Israel for a two-week summer camp organized by the Jewish Agency and the Genesis Fund. The camp, part of an ongoing effort called Project Rimon, is focused on a commitment to instill Jewish identity within the campers and use Israel as the common denominator that unites Jews of Russian origin from diverse locales around the globe.

The Jewish Agency for Israel has bolstered the ranks of its campus emissaries for the 2012-2013 academic year. There are now 56 Israel Fellows on 70 North American campuses (including five in Canada), up from 50 Fellows last year. Trained and recruited by The Jewish Agency, these Fellows help students connect to the Jewish State and respond to anti-Israel activity.

Kevah, a Bay Area-based organization that engages Jewish identity and builds Jewish community through study of classical Jewish texts, has received a $250,000 grant from the Jim Joseph Foundation for the Kevah Teaching Fellowship. The Fellowship will provide participating educators with a fully funded professional development opportunity in facilitating Jewish small group learning for young adults.

The Larry and Lillian Goodman Foundation has awarded a four-year, $2.3 million matching grant to the iCenter and the Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC) to establish a joint project, the Goodman Camping Initiative for Modern Jewish History. A matching component has been fulfilled by The Marcus Foundation and the AVI CHAI Foundation, who are jointly contributing a $1.3 million grant to the program.

The award-winning Jewish non-profit production company G-dcast has announced Studio G-dcast, and opened up the application process for this summer artists’ residency to take place at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. Over the week of August 12-17, 2012, six student animators and six storytellers will come together for an intensive residency that combines art and Jewish learning. Animator-storyteller chevrutas – the Hebrew word for study pairs – will adapt classic Jewish texts into six short films.

The National Ramah Commission of The Jewish Theological Seminary recently announced the establishment of Reshet Ramah, a network driven in part by technology to engage and connect thousands of alumni of the Ramah camping movement and offer a channel for extending and enhancing Jewish community involvement.

Combined Jewish Philanthropies will expand its successful affordability program that has made it possible for more families to send their children to Jewish Day School. The program, “Discover Day School” now offers qualifying families “CJP Discover Day School Checks” to cover up to $6,000 toward tuition at any of Greater Boston’s 10 K-8 Jewish day schools. CJP launched the Discover Day School program last year, offering $4,000 (up to 25 percent of tuition) for families enrolling their children in Jewish Day School kindergarten.

The Foundation for Jewish Camp has received a $3.3 million grant from the Jim Joseph Foundation and AVI CHAI Foundation for a pilot initiative that will create senior experiential Jewish educator positions to be shared by nonprofit Jewish overnight camps and Jewish day or synagogue schools. This groundbreaking program, Nadiv, has several goals. The first is to experiment with a new model that could enhance the quality of education at Jewish camps in a sustainable way. The second objective is to create a new model for year-round positions for trained and talented Jewish educators and the third is to model a new way to foster deeper collaboration between different kinds of institutions in the Jewish educational world.
