We are delighted to invite you to participate in our introduction to Facing History and Ourselves' summer seminar, Democracy at Risk: Holocaust and Human Behavior for Educators in Jewish Settings. In today’s world, questions of how to best build and maintain democratic societies that are pluralistic, open, and resilient to violence are more relevant than ever. Studying the Holocaust allows students to wrestle with profound moral questions raised by this history and fosters their skills in ethical reasoning, critical thinking, empathy, and civic engagement—all of which are critical for sustaining democracy.

Across the globe, individuals and societies are confronting profound questions about identity, membership, and living with difference. This collection provides structured activities for making connections to current events and discussing sensitive topics in a safe and reflective classroom. The lessons examine examples of division and intolerance, as well as powerful cases of individuals and communities working together and standing up to hate.

How is history shaped by hatred, indifference, and denial, as well as by caring, compassion, and responsibility? Grounded in the study of Jewish ethics and values, Facing History and Ourselves' online course, Holocaust and Human Behavior Online Course for Educators in a Jewish Setting, examines the range of choices that led to the failure of democracy in Germany and ultimately to the persecution of millions of Jews and other targeted groups. Participants will investigate the connection between Jewish history and identity, the moral questions inherent in everyday life, and how we as individuals and members of groups can make a difference in the world today.

Teaching the Holocaust in the Context of Jewish History, Ethics andIdentity is a course that offers participants the opportunity to explorethe connection between Jewish History and identity and the moral questions inherent in everyday life.
