The Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe, in conjunction with Paideia, the European Institute for Jewish Studies are sponsoring a seminar for European Jewish museum professionals who are in a position to impact the future of their institutions and to rethink the mission of Jewish museums in a changing environment. Participants will explore the current situation and challenges and together help develop new visions for European Jewish museums. The seminar will facilitate and encourage collaborative work, networking, sharing of practices and the development of a learning community of common interests.

The seminar will be led by Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek and Laurence Sigal, and take place in Stockholm from December 8th-12th, 2013. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2013, and notifications of participation will go out in August, 2013.

Specifically, the week-long seminar will be an opportunity for all participants to develop:

  • A greater understanding of the role that Judaism and Jewish texts can offer when approaching contemporary and critical questions that are shaping the present realities facing Jewish museums.
  • An awareness of the significant social role that Jewish museums can play. The seminar will consider how Jewish museums can explore responses to larger themes such as migration or ghettoization through the Jewish experience.
  • New ideas for relevant exhibition topics and shared programs.
