For all of us, day schools are an investment in the future. In the end, this isn’t about just preserving the identity of individual Jews. The Jewish day school is about strengthening Jewish communities — because Jewish day schools can function as core pillars of the Jewish communities they serve, places where ideas are shared and relationships made. They can help foster a sense of togetherness among Jewish families. They can be hubs for Jewish continuity, conduits to other Jewish agencies, synagogues and camps, and ultimately the mechanisms that will create the identified and engaged Jews who will support programs such as Birthright Israel for those young people that fall outside of day school reach.

Tzvi Pittinsky of the Frisch School recently shared with his blog readers a unique approach to Talmud studies in Frisch's iPad equipped classes – The Flipped Beit Midrash. Based on the 'flipped classroom' approach, Talmud teachers produce short videos on the new Talmud material which are then studied by hevruta pairs in the Beit Midrash on their iPads in preparation for the in-depth lesson which follows in the classroom.

Registration for the second cycle of learning at Project Zug has begun! Project Zug connects Jews in different countries through on-line hevruta (one-to-one) learning. Project Zug seeks to reduce geographical distances and strengthen the bonds between our many vibrant Jewish cultures by pairing Jews in Israel and Jews around the world to learn together. This year's project will run from the week of January 26t, 2014 until the week of April 6, 2014. The deadline for signing up for the 2014 learning cycle is December 31, 2013.

Last week, the National Library, on the campus of the Hebrew University at Givat Ram, Jerusalem, took a major step forward in digitizing and storing all of the world’s Jewish texts by reaching an agreement to produce high-definition images of one of the world’s premier collections of Judaic manuscripts. The National Library and Italy’s Biblioteca Palatina in Parma signed a deal to convert centuries of parchment and paper Hebrew documents to high-quality digital files which will be available to Israeli scholars. A selection of those files will be uploaded to the Internet for general access.

The Global Day of Jewish Learning brings the Jewish people together once a year to celebrate our shared Jewish text through community based learning. The guiding values of the Global Day of Jewish Learning are: fostering Jewish unity, empowering individuals through increased Jewish knowledge, and creating meaningful shared experiences. The fourth annual Global Day of Jewish Learning will be held on Sunday, Nov 17, 2013. The theme of the day and curriculum is Creating Together: Jewish Approaches to Creativity and Collaboration. The Global Day is a project of the Aleph Society and Rabbi Adin Steinzaltz.

Following in the footsteps of the wonderful #edchat, a twice-weekly online chat about all things education, #jedchat was begun two years ago as a parallel version focusing on Jewish education. The weekly chats became a meeting place for many Jewish educators who wanted to expand their networks and discuss some of the pressing issues in Jewish education, and the hashtag itself became an ongoing way for those educators to reach out to one another to seek advice, share successes, and disseminate news. A new team of moderators will be kicking off Jedchat's third year this Wednesday night, October 2nd, from 9pm to 10pm Eastern Time.

Legacy Heritage Fund is pleased to announce the launch of a new round of the Legacy Heritage Fund SMART Board Project for Jewish day schools. The SMART Board Project will enable Jewish day schools to bring the power of SMART Board technology into their classrooms. Participating schools will receive one or more SMART Boards and staff training to achieve proficiency in the use of the equipment.

The World Confederation of Jewish Community Centers (WCJCC), together with its partner organizations, is launching “Amitim-Fellows – A Global Leadership Network” – a three year program designed to develop a group of worldwide Jewish leaders who will bring the idea of Jewish Peoplehood to their communities and beyond. The program will engage and train a select group from 30 JCCs worldwide – ten from North America, ten from Israel, four from Latin America, three from Europe and three from FSU – to build new and innovative global partnerships.
