What is Israel in the minds and hearts of young American Jewish children? Through interviews and photo and music elicitation exercises, this research uncovers how day school kindergarten students conceive of Israel. This study, part of an ongoing longitudinal project, shows how 5- and 6-year-old children are able to form a multilayered conception of Israel, viewing it as both a Jewish state and a place for those who live there, a dangerous place and a safe haven for Jews, and a place at once special and ordinary.

A foundation that distributes free Jewish books to Jewish children in North America and Israel is launching an initiative to deliver Arabic books to Israeli-Arab preschoolers. The Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s PJ Library and Sifriyat Pajama, PJ’s sister program in Israel, have collectively given away more than 10 million books in nine years. The new initiative for Israeli Arabs is called Maktabat al-Fanoos, Arabic for “Lantern Library,” and will distribute Arabic children’s books to 45,000 preschoolers living in Israeli-Arab communities.

In this study, 14 children from a constructivist-based Jewish kindergarten class are interviewed to determine how they construct an understanding of historical time. The analysis of the interviews indicates that students use higher order thinking skills multiple times, especially when the topic of study is connected to their lives. These findings support that constructivist theory is well-suited as a theoretical foundation for Jewish early childhood programs.

What Did the Teacher Say Today? State Religious Kindergarten Teachers Deal With Complex Torah Stories
This study deals with the way in which kindergarten teachers in state religious kindergartens in Israel tell the Torah stories to children. It examines the influence of the teachers’ identity, being part of the religious Zionist society, on the way in which she tells the stories. These kindergarten teachers function at a crossroads of identities. It is to be expected that their identity will be complex, reflecting the built-in dissonance of their lives. The Torah stories include an additional complexity based on the characters. The present study deals with the teachers’ manner of dealing with the above-mentioned complexities.

The Knesset Finance Committee budgeted 1.3 billion NIS to finance the construction of hundreds of new kindergartens in compliance with the newly passed compulsory education law, guaranteeing free kindergartens from the age of three throughout Israel. Construction will commence immediately on about 500 kindergartens which should be ready by the beginning of the next school year. Hundreds of kindergarten teachers are needed so staff these kindergartens.
