Masa Israel Teaching Fellows provides exceptional Jewish college graduates with the opportunity to address Israel’s educational achievement gap and the widespread underperformance of youth in low-income communities on a 10-month English teaching, service-learning program. Following an initial training period, Fellows live in small groups and teach for a minimum of 25 hours a week in schools. Fellows choose or design secondary volunteer projects in their communities. Ongoing pedagogical support, ulpan (Hebrew lessons), host families, trips, and other enrichment activities are provided throughout their time in Israel.

The Israel Tech Challenge, three years in the making, is taking place this week, with 25 of the best Jewish college students in the world (chosen from some 500 applicants) in Israel for an intense insider look at how the Start-Up Nation does its magic. The Challenge — a cooperative effort between The Jewish Agency, the Government of Israel, and private investors — is designed to connect top students from the diaspora with tools and networks to enrich their careers in the hi-tech industry, and to develop connections with the Israeli high-tech industry.

Thirteen senior officials from leading universities and study abroad programs in the United States have arrived in Israel for a week-long visit aimed at developing new study abroad partnerships with Israeli institutions. The visit is being organized by Masa Israel Journey, a partnership between The Jewish Agency for Israel and the Government of Israel, along with the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem recently announced a new initiative exclusively for Masa Israel Journey program alumni: significant tuition grants of up to 70% off for the 2013-2014 Year Program. These $4,000 Year Program tuition grants are available on a limited basis, and roughly parallel the amounts awarded by Masa Israel Journey to those eligible in order to help cover the cost of full-time study at Pardes.

One hundred exemplary North American college graduates will be chosen to teach in underprivileged communities in Israel for a 10-month service program in Israel, Masa Israel Journey announced recently. In order to address Israel’s educational inequity and the widespread underperformance of youth in low-income communities, Masa Israel Journey and the Israeli Ministry of Education are launching Israel Teaching Fellows to serve as volunteer English teachers throughout Israel. The inaugural program will begin in August, 2011; applicants will be notified of their acceptance in May, 2011.

Eight of the US’s top universities will launch study-abroad programs in Israel in 2011 and 2012 as part of a new initiative to encourage study abroad and academic exchange here, the Jewish Agency announced recently. Currently, some 1,500 American university students study in Israel each year. The Masa program, which is part of the Jewish Agency, hopes to boost those numbers considerably so that one day they are on a par with places like London and Paris, where tens of thousands of young Americans go to spend a semester abroad each year.
