Our son got his first siddur (prayer book) last week, and it was–in a word–amazing. A year ago, I never would have predicted he would be up on that stage. In fact, I was convinced of just the opposite–that my son would not be attending Jewish day school at all, let alone participating in the first grade siddur ceremony. I was so convinced, I blogged about how unlikely it would be for he and our new local community Jewish day school to be a match.I’ve never been so happy to say I was wrong.

February is Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month (JDAM). Shutaf Inclusion Programs in Jerusalem is looking to connect with you in order to implement collaborative activities at your school during JDAM and beyond. We've run a variety of programs with educational partners in the US and Israel, for children as well as teens, and have found that talking disability and inclusion is also a great way to create real connections between participants of all ages, from Israel to the US.

On a recent ten-day Tikvah Ramah Israel trip, twelve participants with disabilities, ages 18-40, were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime visit to a 1,000-soldier army base. Admittedly, other tour groups visit army bases; our group spent three hours at the MAZI/Bar-Lev base near Kiryat Milachi, where soldiers – in full uniform – with Down syndrome, autism, and other intellectual disabilities are “just soldiers.”

Yachad and the International Jewish Resource Center for Inclusion and Special Education will present a five-session webinar series, “Including Special Needs Students into a Limudei Kodesh (Jewish Studies) Classroom and Curricula,” beginning Wednesday January 8, from 12-2 p.m., EST, with its first session, “Edible Torah Projects: A Webinar on Experiential Learning.” The intended audience is day school and yeshiva teachers who include diverse students in their classrooms.

Three passionate and perseverant Jewish educators are exemplifying excellence and impact and are the 2013 recipients of The Covenant Award. Howard Blas, Director of the Tikvah Program at Camp Ramah in New England; Judy Finkelstein-Taff, Head of School at the Chicago Jewish Day School; and Zion Ozeri, Founder and Creative Director of The Jewish Lens in New York, were named today by The Covenant Foundation to receive the Award, among the most coveted honors in the field of Jewish education.

The Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC) has unveiled key findings from a survey and in-depth interviews mapping current, potential, and desired services available to children with emotional, intellectual, and physical disabilities at nonprofit Jewish overnight camps across North America. It found that while the field is making progress in the types and amounts of services offered, there is still more to be done.

The Israeli Institute for the Advancement of the Deaf and the national-religious rabbinic association Tzohar joined together on Purim to hold for the first time a sign-language megila reading for the deaf and hard of hearing. More than 600 people turned up to the Tel Aviv International Synagogue on Saturday night for the unique reading of the Book of Esther, one of the central customs of Purim.

Hidden Sparks recently unveiled the first part of a new Judaic studies curriculum at its sixth annual retreat, attended by 40 educators from 30 day schools in New York, New Jersey and Baltimore. The group, which addresses the needs of diverse learners, works to help Jewish educators discover, understand and support all the students in their classrooms, including those with learning difficulties.

The authors describe Hidden Sparks, a program designed to help students understand how they learn. In the process, students become empowered to tackle challenges. The program helps trained teachers reach students who struggled with learning or behavioral challenges and who might otherwise have been overlooked or misunderstood. A central focus in the Hidden Sparks curriculum became metacognition.
