Hidden Sparks is pleased to offer its popular Learning Lenses Course now as a blended course — combining the best of in-person and on-line learning. Learning Lenses, a collaboration between Hidden Sparks and The Churchill School and Center, is Hidden Sparks’ core curriculum, designed for faculty members of day schools and yeshivot. The Learning Lenses curriculum helps educators learn how to observe, reflect and plan for all students in their classrooms.

This quantitative report provides a field-wide update on new developments in the use of online/blended learning in Jewish day schools since the 2012 “Online Learning: State of the Field Survey.”

This past week, The DigitalJLearning Network partnered with ELI talks to present a Google Hangout on Air with Rabbi Yisroel Boruch Sufrin on the topic Jewish Values and Blended Learning: A Surprising Duo. Rabbi Sufrin shared with us some of the educational technologies that he and his colleagues at the Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy in Beverly Hills, CA have been successfully using in both general and Judaic studies classrooms. Rabbi Sufrin then led an exploration of various Jewish texts from the Torah to the Zohar and used these texts to support using blended learning in Judaic Studies.

Mekorot Blended Learning seeks to improve both the quality and affordability of Jewish day schools by producing curricula in Judaic Studies for students in grades five through high school that are teacher-led, student-centered, differentiated, and employ Blended Learning. Better education and lower cost creates a virtuous cycle of sustainability. In this article, we will explain our Design Thinking approach by defining the problem to be solved, presenting the motivation of the persons who want the problems solved, our idea for solving them, our prototype (Mekorot Learning), and our plans for testing the proposed solution.

This year DigitalJLearning Network schools went through a mini-planning process to articulate how the blended learning they are doing supports academic needs and goals. For many, it was a new way of thinking. But in going through the process and asking the right questions, schools that did it well noticed the benefits almost immediately.

Four skills have been identified as critical for the twenty-first century – Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication and Collaboration. The skills of creativity and critical thinking will equip students to deal with an ever-changing world. The skills of communication and collaboration both focus on the increasing need for interaction with others. This issue of the journal addresses challenges of twenty-first century learning. For many, when they hear of 21st century learning they immediately think of technology. That is understandable, but as Gary Hartstein writes in the opening article, the technology is nothing more than a tool – like a pencil or a whiteboard – and needs to be harnessed properly with educational thought to move education forward.

Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration Unveils New Doctoral Degree
Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration will soon be offering a new doctoral degree in Jewish Educational Leadership and Innovation. Slated to begin in the fall, the program will combine virtual learning opportunities with live sessions periodically throughout the year and will replace Azrieli’s existing doctoral degree in Jewish Education and Administration.

YU's Center for the Jewish Future’s #EmpoweredLearning Program Aims to Engage and Inspire Torah Learners
Rabbi Ari Sytner, director of Community Initiatives at Yeshiva University’s Center for the Jewish Future has designed and recently launched #EmpoweredLearning, where different YU scholars introduce profound and intriguing questions in a 10-minute video presentation, leaving viewers with sources and texts which will empower them to discover their own answers. During the week, participants can discuss the questions in an open online forum, until the following week when the presenter’s answer is revealed in three-minute video, followed by a new presenter posing a fresh set of questions. The project is centered on the Jewish holidays and it is only fitting that the first few installments are being released in the three weeks leading up to Shavuot.

Following a successful pilot, The Lookstein Center and the UJA Federation of NY now invite day school educators (grades 2-12) working in NYC, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester to join the second cohort of Jewish studies teachers 'flipping' Jewish learning. Selected candidates will work collaboratively with participants from other schools to learn about and practice blended learning in general and flipped learning methodology specifically. They will refine their skills and be at the forefront to build inter-school educational learning communities.
