There’s a slow-moving revolution happening in Jewish day schools. Over the past eight years, Jewish day schools have embraced a new philosophy called personalized learning where students work simultaneously on different assignments tailored to their individual needs. Blended learning, the method used to achieve personalized learning, structures the classroom so it’s less “teacher at the front of the room” and more a mix of teacher-led and independent and group student learning.

It’s now been about eight years since AVI CHAI became interested in the field of personalized learning and the potential that this new model of education has to impact student growth and classroom experience. We concentrated our efforts on supporting a shift to blended learning, the strategic combination of teacher-led instruction and technology, as a way of creating more student-centered classrooms, where teachers are personalizing instruction based on data from technology platforms. Of course it now is satisfying to witness the adoption of these methods in many North American day schools. At the same time, we have learned a great deal about the most effective ways to approach this work to help schools actually make these changes.

A new online learning tool from Yeshiva University’s Center for the Jewish Future is making it a little easier for anyone committed to Torah study to stay on track. Called Koveah.org, the online tool creates personalized learning schedules with daily reminders to keep users focused. Users can choose from a range of topics in Tanach, Mishna, Gemara, Rambam and Shulchan Aruch to study, then set their starting point, pace and the days of the week on which they would like to learn.

For a long time, educational technology was focused, to a large extent, on the use of computers (and later the internet) within the classroom. Educators spoke about “breaking the classroom walls” by using YouTube clips to start a classroom discussion or by letting students look up information on the internet. Teachers began to realize that they were no longer the “owners” of information, once handheld internet devices were introduced (aka smartphones) smart kids would challenge the teachers' authority by fact checking the information discussed in class. Educators then spoke of the transition from “the sage on the stage to the guide on the side” that meant moving away from the lecturing model – but what instead? How can a teacher be a “guide on the side” with so little time to teach (or “guide”)?

The AVI CHAI Foundation is partnering with BetterLesson to bring personalized professional development to Jewish day schools to strengthen personalized learning. This is an exciting opportunity for interested schools to apply for a team of teachers to engage with expert blended learning coaches to develop their blended learning practices. This Spring pilot program is designed for teachers who have already introduced blended or personalized learning strategies in their classrooms. The program begins with an in-depth, 2-day Design Studio during which teachers will choose one area of their current blended learning practice that they want to further develop and collaborate with their coach to design a plan to implement these enhancements. The design studio is followed by ongoing virtual coaching, including biweekly meetings, as they implement their designs this Spring.
