Submissions are now being welcomed online for the Jerusalem Unity Prize in memory of Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar and Naftali Fraenkel, z”l, whose tragic kidnapping and murder deeply moved Israeli society and Jews around the globe. The prize was conceived in partnership with the families of the three boys and Jerusalem-based organization Gesher as a way to perpetuate the spirit of unity which existed across Israel and around the world during the days following the boys’ kidnapping.

Eleven Hundred French Jewish High School Students Celebrate Hanukkah in Jerusalem
Authors: eJewish Philanthropy
Eleven hundred high school seniors from twenty-five Jewish schools across France celebrated the third night of Hanukkah (Thursday, December 18, 2014) in Jerusalem. Participants enjoyed performances by Israeli singer-songwriter Yonatan Razel and IDF Chief Cantor Lt. Col. Shai Abramson, accompanied by the IDF Rabbinate Troupe. Bac Bleu Blanc (“High School Seniors in Blue and White”) is a program run by The Jewish Agency for Israel, with the support of Keren Hayesod-UIA, that brings French Jewish high school seniors to Israel on a one-week educational trip every winter.

It’s Birthright Israel — for Jewish Moms
Authors: Sales Ben
On the surface, the tour looked much like a standard Birthright Israel trip: Participants celebrated Shabbat in Jerusalem’s Old City, swam in the Dead Sea and ascended the ancient mountain fortress at Masada. The trip was mostly free and organizers were prepared with follow-up programming after the participants returned home. But the nearly 200 women who arrived in Jerusalem last week weren’t there for one of the free 10-day Jewish identity-building trips that Birthright has operated for more than a decade. They were participants in what has been described as Birthright for Jewish moms, an eight-day tour of the Jewish state for mothers.

Your Kids Are Ready to Talk About Israel. Are You?
Authors: Zakai Sivan, Heller Stern Miriam
How do we talk to young children living far away from Israel about the current situation (Operation Protective Edge) when they are not yet old enough to understand terms like “Zionism” or “anti-Semitism” or “terrorism” or “occupation”? As parents of young children and also as Jewish educators, we would like to offer some tips for talking (and listening) to young children about the current conflagration.

Does Taglit-Birthright Israel Foster Long-Distance Nationalism?
Authors: Sasson Theodore, Shain Michelle, Hecht Shahar, Wright Graham, Saxe Leonard
Taglit-Birthright Israel has brought hundreds of thousands of diaspora Jewish young adults on tours of Israel. Drawing on data from a large-scale program evaluation, we ask how the program affects participants’ feelings of homeland attachment and political views on contentious homeland issues. North Americans who traveled to Israel with Taglit between 2010 and 2012 were surveyed together with a comparison group of applicants to the program who did not participate.

Teaching Israel After the War: How the Recent Conflict in Gaza Affects Lesson Plans
Authors: Pine Dan
In anticipation of a 2014-15 school year fraught with anxiety over how to teach kids about the Israel-Hamas war — and about Israel in general, in the wake of the war — Jewish LearningWorks (JLW), an S.F.-based nonprofit formerly called the Bureau of Jewish Education jumped into action late in the summer and organized several educators-only workshops. The gatherings helped teachers and administrators at Jewish day schools figure out how to best approach the subject of Israel. And in conjunction with that, JLW also launched a Web page titled “Israel-Gaza Conflict Resources,” a compendium of helpful materials for teachers.

The program, Honeymoon Israel, has just obtained initial funding to finance two pilot trips this spring, each of which will bring 20 couples on nine-day tours of the country. The first trip will target couples from Los Angeles and Phoenix, and the second one, couples from Los Angeles and Atlanta.
