Survey of the Governance Practices of Jewish Day Schools

Investing in FSU Jewish Youth

The Avi Chai Foundation has allocated a sizeable grant to Or Avner, the educational umbrella organization which, among many other projects, oversees Jewish children’s summer camps in Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union. Thanks to this funding, educational projects threatened with closure due to the global financial crisis were literally saved. As in previous years, more than 2,000 children will benefit from overnight Jewish camps this summer.

Helen Bader Foundation to Create $10 million Day School Scholarship Endowment in Milwaukee

The Helen Bader Foundation is creating a permanent endowment to help low- and middle-income families afford Jewish day school in Milwaukee. The foundation will give at least $10 million over the next 10 years to create an endowment for the Helen Bader Scholarship Fund, which will be administered by the Milwaukee Jewish federation. When the gift is complete, it will be the largest ever received by the federation.

Saudi Arabian Educators Visit Kansas Jewish School

The educators were in greater Kansas City as part of the US State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program. Day School Cooperation to Yield Cost Savings

The Avi Chai Foundation is awarding grants to six collaborative initiatives across North America designed to cut costs involved in day school education. Day school collaborations are one way to help address the issues of high day school costs that inevitably result in high tuitions. The foundation has started a blog where the grant recipients will document their experiences and provide monthly updates about their progress, lessons learned as well unforeseen challenges along the way and how they address them.

How Bad Is The Day School Crisis?

Tuition Crisis Spurs New Community Fund

The Rabbinical Council of Bergen County last week unanimously voiced its support of a community fund to raise money for day schools struggling with rising costs and skyrocketing tuitions. Following the vote, the Northern New Jersey Tuition Crisis Committee, the group of day school representatives and rabbis that proposed the kehilla fund, its unofficial name, filed incorporation papers to create Northern New Jersey Jewish Education for Generations Inc. The nonprofit organization will manage the fund — to be called Northern New Jersey Kehillot Investing in Day Schools, or NNJKIDS.
