It includes only institutions whose primary focus is on modern Israel, rather than on Jewish or Middle Eastern studies more broadly. It also excludes institutions or organizations that focus primarily on policy advocacy or public outreach rather than scholarly research and instruction.

AIS is open to all individuals who are engaged in, or share an interest in, scholarly inquiry about Israel, the Zionist movement, or the pre-state Jewish community in Palestine.
