Saul Kaiserman of New Jewish Education draws attention to a NY Times Magazine feature article on building better teachers, tying its conclusions to Jewish education. He emphasizes the need to simultaneously be focused on improving pedagogy and content knowledge through professional development as well as paying higher salaries to attract and retain qualified teachers.

As a result of a generous grant from the Jim Joseph Foundation, HUC-JIR will be offering full tuition scholarships to students who study Jewish education at the Schools of Education in Los Angeles and New York. This will be available for those students applying for 2010.

The Post- Baccalaureate Certificate in Jewish Education is a 20-unit graduate program that provides students with the knowledge and tools to become effective Jewish educators. By integrating classical and contemporary Jewish studies with pedagogy, the certificate in Jewish Education program will prepare its students to embark on careers as educators in a formal or informal Jewish educational setting. The core components include three graduate Jewish studies courses, three education courses, and a final project.

This certificate program prepares participants to serve as effective leaders of informal educational institutions and programs. Designed for youth directors, synagogue program directors, Jewish camp leaders, Israel program leaders and trip leaders, the curriculum focuses on the content, methodology and leadership skills that Jewish educators need to maximize the 'teachable moment' that is the essence of experiential education. While emphasizing informal education for adolescents, the certificate applies to experiential programming for students of all ages and complements the field of Jewish family education.
