Cynthia Ozick, in her article 'The Rights of History and the Rights of Imagination,' raises the issue of ethical considerations and moral responsibility when writing about the Holocaust. Ozick asserts that 'what is permissible to the playfully ingenious author of Robinson Crusoe - fiction masking as chronicle - is not permitted to those who touch on the destruction of six million souls, and on the extirpation of their millennial civilization in Europe.' This webinar will focus on the tension that exists between ethics and aesthetics when analyzing Holocaust literature and film.

This webinar will help school personnel better understand and address dangerous applications of technology impacting today’s youth. This is not a “technophobic” presentation. Instead the emphasis is on creating a healthy balance of helpful technology and protecting adolescents from its more destructive applications. Attendees will explore the different varieties of technology available, along with unhealthy ways in which this can be utilized. The ways in which technology is affecting youth academically and socially will be addressed as well.

Higher education systems have undergone huge changes in the last decades which forced them to redefine their traditional roles, rethink their theoretical premises and restructure their operational practices. As part of a joint project with the Israel Defense Forces, 100 high school students will be chosen each year to participate in a special elite program that allows them to complete a bachelor's degree before performing an extended army service of six years, instead of the usual two or three. During the six years, they would serve as school teachers, primarily in the periphery. This is part of the Israeli Education Ministry's plans to improve the quality of instruction at the country's schools.

The Beit Berl College has established an academic unit to aid beginning teachers deal with difficulties in their work during their year of internship and the following two years of work. The main aim of the unit is to prevent the dropout of beginning teachers from the school system. This, in the light of recent research, which shows that about half of the graduates of Israeli teacher colleges don't go into teaching or dropout of the profession within three years of their graduation.

In October, 2010 the Shalom Hartman Institute, in partnership with Keren Karev, will launch the new Be’eri School for Teacher Education. The School will offer a basic and advanced track for teachers, as well as a track customized for school principals. The basic teachers training track provides junior and high school teachers with the tools required to become instructors in Jewish heritage—Tarbut Yisrael. The advanced track is targeted at accredited teachers in the field of Jewish heritage who wish to broaden their expertise in this field and potentially become Tarbut Yisrael coordinators in their schools.

The Third International Online Conference, 'Opening Gates in Teacher Education, 2011: Teacher Education in the Age of Globalization,' will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 25-26, 2011. The Siegal College, Cleveland, OH is devoting its summer institute to Eilu V’Eilu: The Tradition of Sacred Argument in Jewish Education. The institute to be held in Cleveland on August 8-11, 2010, will be led by the full range of the Siegal College Judaic and Education faculty as well as a set of national experts leading intensive tracks.

A new program for recruiting bright young college graduates to the teaching profession has been launched by the Israel Ministry of Education along with JDC Israel and Hakol Hinuch, the Movement for the Advancement of Education in Israel. Recent college graduates will be recruited to begin teaching in the 2010-2011 school year after an intensive summer course. They will continue their teacher training and mentoring while teaching an 80% work load, receiving their teaching certificates at the end of the first year of the program.
