Launched over Hanukkah, 929 is a $12 million Israeli initiative to turn the Tanakh into a national conversation. Drawing its name from the 929 chapters of the Hebrew Bible, the project aims to get hundreds of thousands of Israelis from all walks of life to complete the corpus over three-and-a-half years by covering five chapters a week. The hub of the enterprise is its state-of-the-art website, where readers can find commentary from a wide array of contributors, from celebrated secular authors like Etgar Keret and A.B. Yehoshua, to spiritual leaders like ultra-Orthodox former Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau and progressive trailblazer Rabbi Tamar Elad-Appelbaum.

JETS Israel has created a class on the teaching the Holocaust. Entitled 'Remembering and Rebuilding', the online course links the Holocaust with the establishment of the State of Israel. Students become familiar with aspects of both events as they examine the importance of remembering the Holocaust in order to create better, more meaningful lives in the present and build for the future. Every aspect of the course is designed to make the holocaust meaningful as the students develop a personal connection to the Holocaust era and to people who perished as well as to those who survived.

The website, 23hrs.com, built by two New Community Jewish High School seniors, matches teens with community service opportunities based on their location, skills and interests. The site also tracks the number of hours that the teens volunteer and sends the data to their school for recording purposes. To make the experience more social, the site also has photo sharing and tagging features.

This past week, CASJE (the Consortium for Applied Studies in Jewish Education), in conjunction with The Jewish Education Project, brought together experts across disciplines to tackle this important question. I was surprised, especially given recent events, how many of the panelists adopted positions that relativized and even minimized the importance of antisemitism in contemporary Jewish Education. I have embedded their conversation below and I am curious if readers agree with their analysis.

Many kids complain about being stuck at school, but for some, like those laid up in the hospital for long periods, going to school is a privilege they can only wish for. To help kids who are long-term residents of Schneider Children’s Hospital in central Israel, electronics giant Samsung and Israeli e-book distributor E-vrit are teaming up to provide an educational experience that will allow them to keep up with their classmates.

In a recent discussion on the Jewish Educator's JedLab Facebook Forum, participants actively debated different approaches to teaching Chanukah. Many posters suggested exclusive approaches that negated other possibilities. Leaving aside the question of the veracity of the traditional Chanukah narrative, JETS Israel addresses this issue by bringing a variety of themes and approaches to students and their families as the Jewish world prepares to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

For most graduates of the JETS No Teacher Left Behind course, the skills and techniques that they learn during the course are put to use in their classrooms. Teachers in Amsterdam, however, took the concept one step further and have created an online Jewish school for 9 and 10 year olds who have little or no opportunity to learn about their Jewish heritage but who are eager to do so.

Kids who want to know more about ancient Israel but can’t get out into the field can now dig into a new app put out by the Israel Archaeological Authority. Dig Quest, available for iPhone and iPad (Android on the way) devices, lets kids assemble puzzles, search for ancient artifacts, and thumb through the Dead Sea Scrolls to discover Israel’s hidden treasures.

Hundreds of teachers, supervisors and educational technology directors converged on the MOFET Institute in Tel Aviv on November 11, 2014 to participate in the third Global School Twinning Network Conference. They were joined by tens of Jewish educators from around the world who participated in the conference virtually via online broadcast from the Israel Ministry of Educations website.

Founded less than a decade ago, Mechon Hadar, or Hadar for short, is the umbrella institution of the celebrated halakhic egalitarian Yeshivat Hadar. Hadar just updated its website and it’s not just another institutional facelift. After eight years of growth, Hadar has created a treasure trove of Torah resources, and now it has chosen to share them, intentionally. With very few exceptions, all of Hadar‘s resources are now shared with an Open Content license.
