JWeekly.com reports about a nondenominational Jewish high school offering self-paced individual learning and low-cost tuition, The Pre-Collegiate Learning Center, which is expected to open in central New Jersey in September, 2011. The school has been bolstered by a $50,000 grant from the Avi Chai Foundation. Its projected tuition: $5,000 a year. The grant from Avi Chai was given with the promise of more funding if the school commits to meeting certain milestones. The schools founders expect the school to be self-supporting within several years. One of the school’s major lures is its tuition, considerably less than that of other day schools. The school expects to keep costs down through lower expenditures on teaching staff than a typical Jewish day school. Instead, students will be assigned to their own computer portal pages through which they will access computer-based instructional materials, including lectures conducted or prerecorded by off-site instructors. Students’ progress also will be tracked online.

To gain a better understanding about the ways that new media can be used to engage people in Jewish life, The Natan Fund is launching a New Media grant area for 2011. Natan’s New Media grants will support cutting-edge projects that use new media to create new access points to Jewish life and learning, build Jewish communities, and/or inspire and enable people to be a part of Jewish life. In this pilot round of the New Media grants, Natan expects to give away about $100,000 in grants ranging from $10,000 – $40,000.

The Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE), which aims to help day schools in facing multiple challenges around tuition, affordability, and the middle-class squeeze; about enrollment, attrition, and fundraising in the 21st century, has launched a new webzine. Sustained! Viable Jewish Day Schools for an Enduring Future is a bi-monthly resource for day school professionals and volunteer leaders with content that includes best practices, cutting-edge tools, resources and data, programs that make a difference, and practical advice. Sustained! is a new sort of PEJE publication, incorporating video, a social media column and even illustrated case studies.

The Shalem Center in Jerusalem announced today that it has received a $12.5 million challenge grant from the Tikvah Fund to help establish Israel’s first liberal arts college. The grant, intended to galvanize other major philanthropists to support the launching of Shalem College, provides a one-to-one match for gifts that are received during the college’s first four years. Shalem’s application for accreditation from Israel’s Council for Higher Education is pending, and it is anticipated that the college will open in fall 2012.

The Jim Joseph Foundation made a $3 million challenge grant to the Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School -- the 5-year-old foundation's first direct grant to a rabbinical school. The money will be disbursed over a five-year period. The yeshiva will commit to matching $2.5 million of the grant on a one-to-one basis. The Jim Joseph grant is designed to permit the school to produce more pulpit and campus rabbis and Jewish educators, and to create a separate track for Jewish educators that will carry the same prestige as the pulpit track.

With the power of a $3.1 million grant from the AVI CHAI Foundation over three years, the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE) has stimulated a six-figure investment from three communities in North America to address the very real challenge of day school affordability. The Generations pilot program , a three-way collaboration between PEJE, a federation or central Jewish agency, and AVI CHAI, seeks to transform the way schools fund their budgets by raising endowment and legacy gifts. The Generations program offers communities and schools expertise in building endowments through customized coaching, local and national training programs, assistance with potential donor identification, cultivation and stewardship, and the establishment of a national knowledge center to share best practices.

In a recent blog post, AVI CHAI Program Officer, Rachel Mohl Abrahams writes about the developing change in the strategy of AVI CHAI's educational technology program. Over the last two years they ran a grants program called “experiments in educational technology.” They gave out small grants to Judaic Studies educators to incorporate technology into their classes and share their experiences with the Jewish educational community on an edtech blog. They are now coming to the realization that the focus of their educational technology program should be to get Jewish day schools to think about what learning needs to look like in the 21st century.

The Jerusalem Post reports that a record-breaking number of North American applicants signed up to take part in Birthright-Taglit this year, according to data recently released by the organization. The program, which brings young Jewish adults from the Diaspora to Israel on free, 10-day educational tours of the country, said it received 40,108 applications during the seven-day registration period which ended last week.

Stephen Muss, Honorary Chairman of Lapid - The Coalition for High School Age Programs in Israel, reacted to a recent announcement about new extraordinary support for Birthright Israel – Taglit, by the Israeli Government. He points out that the Birthright model of awarding free ten-day trips to Israel for Jewish youth age 18-26 has caused the enrollment of Israel high school-age programs to suffer as they do not receive financial support of the Israeli Government. Parents faced with the decision to either pay out money for high school age trips to Israel or wait until “Birthright” age, when it can be free, choose the latter, even though intensive Israel high school trips may even be more effective in helping youth develop their Jewish identity.
