The Covenant Foundation invites applications for the 2010 Covenant Grants for innovative programs in Jewish schools, agencies, community organizations, and other institutional settings. These grants will provide funding to help creative Jewish educators develop and implement significant and cost-effective approaches to Jewish education that are potentially replicable in other settings. Covenant Grants may also be awarded for projects whose purpose is to disseminate particularly effective existing programs.

Professional and lay leaders from Jewish day schools from across the spectrum of practice will come together in a first-ever unified educational conference in January 2010 in the Metropolitan New York area. Jointly planned by RAVSAK: The Jewish Community Day School Network, the Institute for University-School Partnership at Yeshiva University, the Solomon Schechter Day School Association, and PARDeS: The Progressive Association of Reform Day Schools, the shared conference represents ground-breaking work in cost-effectiveness and community building among Reform, Conservative, Community and Orthodox day schools.

Rlka Levin of JESNA has published a list of achievements, developments, ideas, and trends in Jewish education worthy of note and gratification which have emerged over the last decade. On December 22, 2009, Yeshiva University’s Institute for University-School Partnership convened a program on “Building Boards for Economic and Strategic Success for Yeshivot and Day Schools” in the Five Towns and Rockaways. The program is the sixth in a series this past year that helps schools to engage in research-based data-driven practices to improve their fiscal solvency.

Daniel Sieradski, known blogger, Jewish culture tech innovator has begun to publish 31 ideas that he believes to be truly revolutionary and transformative — things that have the potential to alter the Jewish world as we know it. Most are ideas for web applications, some are web publications, and some are ideas for new organizations all together. One idea a day will be published online during January, 2010.

At a New York meeting in mid December 2009, convened by the Avi Chai Foundation, representatives of Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and community day schools discussed why and how most schools were able to retain students at a time of serious economic recession and what lessons can be learned going forward. On the table were the findings of a survey on enrollment changes in Jewish day schools from 2008-2009 to 2009-2010 compiled by Avi Chai. The most surprising finding of the survey is that while enrollment has declined, the drop has not been nearly as steep as many educators and communal officials had predicted.

The AVI CHAI Foundation has released a summary of data on day school enrollment changes between the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years. The data, collected by several organizations, including AVI CHAI, PEJE, RAVSAK, SSDSA and PARDeS shows that while day school enrollment has declined, the drop has not been nearly as steep as many educators and communal officials had predicted. Other highlights of the findings: larger schools (250 or more students) experienced an average drop of 3 percent; smaller schools were harder hit; South Florida suffered the greatest decreases; and emergency and other financial aid increased significantly.

He sees these schools as institutions which are most likely to bring their students to choose to be active members of the Jewish people, committed to Jewish marriage and family life.

An anonymous group of donors has given more than $12 million to a small Jewish high school in Waltham, MA., providing a boost not only to the school, but also to the world of Jewish philanthropy, which has been jolted by the twin shocks of the recession and the Madoff scandal. The contribution to the 315-student Gann Academy appears to be one of the largest ever to a local Jewish day school, and the first major gift in the local Jewish world since the recession hit.
